I'm an image quality nut, so I'd give up the reach for the IQ and take the 16-80.

16-80 not supposed to be the greatest lens and has a cheap focus motor i believe , way overpriced imo , im going the 24-85 vr g , supposed to be one of the sharpest lenses and good value

@egosbar Apples and coconuts. The 16-80 is a DX lens, the 24-85 is an FX lens. Don't go by the reviews and the angry reviews. The 16-80 is a beautiful lens, focus quickly and accurately, and clearly sits between the plastic fantastic (but great value) 18-55 and the wonderful but heavy metal (and pricy) 17-55. I own all three. If you don't, it's hard to compare them. The 24-85 is not a useful DX lens a) Doesn't get wide enough (36mm equiv vs 24mm equiv) and b) is not optimized (weight and size) for the format (i.e. for the same size and weight you get a 5x vs 3.5x zoom, and f/2.8 vs f/3.5) Great for an FX, notsomuch for DX.

I'm actually looking into 16-80 lens as my very first zoom lens for my D7200.

I use it on my D7200. Good combo, balances well. A good upgrade from the "kit" lens, and a very useful zoom range. Pair it with an 80-400 and you've got 16-400 (24-600 equiv) in two lenses

theres not a lot of difference between 24 and 36mm , your feed can move backwards a step of two lol , i would be worried about the cheap focus motor in a 1200 dollar lens id expect more , if it were 600 then id be all over it

Hey, some people cry over 2mm at the wide end. I own 20, 24, 28, and 35mm primes, and find them all useful. But I'm also happy to run around with my 50mm and zoom with my feet, when I can. If you are doing astrophotography it's a bit hard to move the earth a few steps back
The only person who said it had a cheap focus motor is the angry man. Personally I have no issues, and the IQ is way better than any of the other "normal DX zooms" other than than the 17-55 natch'.

I rate the 16-80 lens as my best lens. It is on our D500 all the time! Sure. Have other lens and cameras. Personally I shoot with the D7200 and various, lens most as once the 16-80 gets used it is hard to get it back from family!

@spraynpray - any news on your lens ... and camera?
I, too, am interested in an alround zoom with better IQ than my current 18-200.
I was looking at the 16-80, but as my need for an "indoor people lens" grew bigger, I've changed my focus, I suppose, to a used Nikon 24-70 because of constant f2.8 and faster AF. Its focal length range would suit me very well. Was ten seconds from getting one on Ebay the other day, but was outsmarted by another bidder, I suppose.
Anyway, that would leave me still in need of a travel (or "go-for-a-walk") lens, but with no money left. Damn.
Sigma or Tamron, while I'm saving up again, please build a sharp 15-90 mm f/4.0.

The 16-80 is a constant f/4 if you set it there  and it's damn sharp at f/4 too

You're right, of course, @Ironheart. It's probably just an instinct saying that you can save a bit of money by not going to f/2.8 at the wide end. But the potential price diff could actually be completely insignificant.

We own two Nikkor 18-200s. They rarely get used these days. There are better .Nikon lens out there. The new 16-80 and the new 70-300 VR DX. For low light sports I still would use my FOUR 70-300 FX VR lens. So the 18-200 is not much of a team player, as Ken Rockwell says. I do respect the 18-200 Nikkor, just we have better results or confidence in these other lens.

@Sports since it is already a DX lens optimized for the smaller light circle, I'm not sure you would save much money or weight. The extra stop does come in handy occasionally, though I typically shoot a few clicks down from wide open on any lens if I can get away with it  I'm thinking the perfect pair is the 16-80 and the 80-400, though I currently own the 70-300, I am eyeing the bigger brother. Nothing wrong with the 70-300 stopped down a couple of clicks.

@Sports: Generally the 16-80 is OK, but I'm not 'wowed' by it. It is better than the old 16-85.

Still musing over my setup... sigh.. it never stops does it .... anyway any more insight on the 16-80 @spraynpray ?

Also @Pistnbroke what are our thought on the D500+16-80 combo for events? I know you like the 18-140 but I would be interested in your thoughts again on why you may feel it could be an advantage over the 16-80 ? And if the 18-300 F6.3 (big brother to 18-140) wont be better still ?

Personally hearty, IMHO if the focal length of the 18-140 is better for your use, I'd go for it. I think the 16-80 is overpriced for the small difference in IQ. Tests are one thing, whether you can see the difference in use is another...

I already have the 18-140.. quite happy with it really.. but ... 16 F2.8 in dim events sounds like a significant advantage over 18 f3.5 .. no?

    18-140 + Nikon1 j5 --

Yes if you had a D90, not any big deal with your D7200's ISO capability. Shame we aren't neighbours, we could try each others lenses.
