Which 24-70 f/2.8?

I just broke a Nikon 27-70 f/2.8g ( The old one without VR). It was my most used lens on a D810. What do I replace it with?

Repair it? (Nikon wants $600. to repair it.)
New Nikon 24-70 F/2.3 E VR ($2,300)?
Tamron ($1,300)?
Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 ART (It is coming...) ?

    ... or Tokina 24-70 f/2.8?
... or buy the Nikon G again?
If AF performance has top priority, then Nikon E, no doubt.
Optically, we all know that Sigma is expected to deliver something good.
The Tokina is easy to forget in this game, but its image quality should be very good.

I would go with fixing your current 24-70 G or purchasing another one. I've wanted Sigma to make a 24-70 for the longest time, but instead of waiting, I picked up the Nikon G, as well as three Sigma Art lenses over the last two years. Of the four lenses I've purchased, I've returned or sold all but the Nikon. The Sigma lenses, despite producing great quality images, worked inconsistently and left me guessing if more than half of my shots were in focus, even after careful AF Fine Tuning. Sigma might have greatly improved the optics of their lenses, but if they can't consistently perform on the job, then I can't afford to have them in my bag.

Plus, I was hoping a 24-70 f/2.8 would be in their Sport line of lenses to at least get weather sealing. If a 24-70 is your most used lens, you'll need one that can take a beating if necessary.

if its your "most used lens" then get the best.. in this case its the Nikon. in 15 years you will still have the lense and it will still be the "most used"...

I got the Tamron.. its great except for the onion bokeh on points of light.. Some of us are expecting a G2 24-70 tamron sometime soon. but there is no rumour. But 24-70 is not my "most used" may be 3rd for me.... so its no big deal if there are a few compromises... for a most used lense I would like the least compromises, cost will be a lower priority.

Thanks all. I guess I just needed to hear some other peoples thoughts. I'm going with the Nikon E.

The factors I consider most important are Image Quality, followed by reliability followed by ease-of-use, so it is the Nikon E. I am 74 years old, you would think that, by now, I would have figured out mu own criteria. Oh well better late than never. :)

  • $600 is cheaper than a new lens.
