70-200 2.8E

So it appears that Nikon is upgrading the rock solid 70-200 2.8G to E. How many of you will be buying this lens? As I am impressed with the 24-70 2.8E, it will be on my list.

Maybe if it focuses a little better than the current one in lower light.
Or maybe thats just the body(D810 AF >> D800 AF)..

The FL element should reduce CA and weight. A winner.

I'll stick with my G lens for the foreseeable future. I haven't even begun to get anywhere where it cannot go.

But Christmas is coming, in case anyone is feeling extra (extra) generous.

I am glad.. It will probably "fix" the focus breathing "issue" of the current 70-200. Then Tony Northrop will have no more reason to stay with canon.. (I am sure he will find another reason that canon fanboy !) ;-)

Another reason I am glad is there may be some nice deals on the old/current version !

My current workhorse is an old-ish Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 without VR. It's working flawlessly, but I'll probably be upgrading in a couple of year to get better IQ and VR ... and the electrical aperture control should be an advantage, too, I suppose.
The G is not a big enough step forward for me to cough op.
The (rumored) Nikon E, and the (rumored) Sigma Sport will be my two candidates. The decision will depend on price and reviews and whatever hands-on comparison I can get away with.

I love my 70-200 G VR lens and when the current version came out with the VRII, I could not justify the delta in cost. Bet that new "E" version will be expensive. Agree with heartyfisher, they will probably fix the "focus breathing issue". It will be interesting to see what other "tweaks" they make.

I can only imagine how expensive this 70-200 would be. I would imagine it would approach $3000 and it would at least be $2750.

I am thrilled! There will be deals galore on the current lens. I have been thinking of upgrading my old 80-200 for years... this situation could be perfect!

Totally agree with that price range; $2,700-$3000. My hunch is the existing 70-200 will remain in the line until they run out of components and I expect the price to drop ~$250-$300. That should cause lots of people to upgrade.

I remember when I owned that 80-200 lens. My wife called it "the TANK". What a great lens that is. Had it for 5 years and broke down and got the 70-200 VR and two years later the VRII was introduced. It was not worth the upgrade from the VR to VRII for me. My suggestion is to buy the 70-200; believe me you won't look back.

I have the 70-200 VR II, it looks like my upgrade will be to add the 200-500. The 70-200 VR II works great for me.

retread - I added the 200-500 lens to my took bag this summer and got some great wildlife shots in the Tetons and Yellowstone National Parks. The 24-70, 70-200, 200-500 make a terrific "trio". Very very pleased with it.

I did make one mistake during that trip in July, used the 70-200 95% of the time on a D7100 and then started using it on the D750. Wish I would have done that earlier.

Why was that a mistake Photobug?

It was great having two bodies in the back seat, the long lens on the D7100 for wildlife and the 24-70 on the D750. Wish I had used the 70-200 more on the D750 for the optimum image quality. I know, a small thing but one I should have done more.

I see that on B&H. My 80-200 has the really quaint "slip-N-slide" focal length adjustment as part of the focussing ring. The "one-handed journalist's solution." But I think Photobug is right in my getting a 70-200 VR. The time is at hand.

The 200-500 is the one I am missing. I use the 70-200 most of the time. I do wildlife, sports, some events and just did my first air show. Wish I had the 200-500 for that.

One mustn't forget the 200-400. I would consider that if I was shooting wildlife.

It's a tough decision between the 200-400 and the 200-500. Time for a pro & con sheet to compare them. I find that brings some clarity to my assessments when deciding on DSLR's or lens.

I have looked at it but it is out of my price range. I passed up a coulple used ones as they were too high priced for my budget which is streached about to the breaking point.

This is great news I was quite happy when I read about this refresh this past week on the Nikon Rumors site. I would be all in if this rendition is made lighter with the newFresnel (PF) technology like the 300mm F4 was. However, I would imagine it will bump the lens into the $3,000 range so I'd delay initially. Guaranteed it will be strong and optically superior amongst all 70-200 VR lenses though. We always talk about the other factor too, which involves the previously great versions dropping in price. The 70-200 G is a winner and worth buying at $400 bucks lower. ;)

According to the main blog it'll be closer to $3,200. Get busy saving buddies!

Really $3200 LOL I sold off my VR1 about a 6 months ago for ~ $1100 and bought a EX+ VR2 for ~$1350 The VR2 model has a great upgrade for my D810 I can live with the focus breathing at close distances. I refused to pay the $2200-$2300 they wanted for it new.

It maybe the new norm but for $3200 they had better made it perfect. Does it come with fries and a drink?

OUCH...at that price point it becomes a lens for the "pro". I can't afford that lens even with a discount.

This lens has a fluorite element? This would be a first in something other than a supertele.
