Greetings, new joiner here, although with Peter's outstanding coverage I believe I secured a D850 in the first wave from B&H (they never tell but I got my order in when they opened the pre-order link a day early). Been shooting since 1980, originally with indestructible, fully manual, Olympus OM1 gear. When the eyesight faded a bit I moved to Nikon and digital in 2005. My main interests are landscape and travel photography. Given the opportunity I shoot wildlife and sporting events. Looking forward to sharing and learning from the folks on the site.

    Current gear: D810, D3x, F5, 24 f1.4G, 35 f1.4G, 50 f1.4D, 85 f1.8D, 14-24 f2.8G, 24-70 f2.8G, 70-200 f2.8G, 300 f2.8G, 28-300 f3.5 - 5.6, TC-14E II, TC-2.0E III, SB900. Capture One Pro for post-processing.

Hello. I've been browsing this site for a few days and finding some comments useful thought I'd register and contribute whenever I don't feel out of my depth. I live in England UK. getting on a bit but still working with no plans or intention to retire. I started taking photos as a quick way to write poetry. In those days, it was film camera and using Kodak Ektar 64 (ISO). Over the years, the poetry fell by the wayside and I got more into photography. DSLRl now: I started with a Nikon D70, my wife bought me a D5000 as a birthday present (without knowing that I'd dismissed the d5000 as not worth getting for my needs) so in 2011 I exchanged the D5000 for an 800E for serious stuff, with a couple of Nikkor zoom lens (one wide angle). for my work, I use Olympus Tough TG (idea when standing in the pouring rain.) Nowadays, my knowledge and understanding of the technicalities is better, but composition is my thing ad always has been.

A couple of years ago, I was invited to author a local history book of photographs which involved my taking approximately 200 photos. For the publishing contract, I negotiated the film rights. The royalties from the book sales are enough to keep me for about 5 minutes in a manner to which I have become accustomed!

Subjects: buildings mostly, reflections, scaffolding. I rarely take pictures of anything that moves: with the exception of clouds and whenever my wife isn't looking. A few years ago, I was introduced to HDR which I love doing. I've been using Lightroom ever since it came out.

My most extravagant purchase is a colour meter. Measuring the K number of colour and entering the number in the camera and adjusting for the slight difference between the K numbering in the camera and the meter reading when post-processing avoids having to guess what the colour actually looked like whenever post-processing. Generally, I prefer RAW because I enjoy sitting in front of a computer screen for hours tinkering with Lightroom in the hope of removing all over exposed pixels!

Hello. I am a long-time Nikon shooter. Prefer full-frames. Mostly portraits, dance groups, some landscapes. Tried the whole mirrorless thing, but missed my big, heavy Nikons. So I'm back. Look forward to learning a lot from this group.

Hi all, my name is Alex and I need your advice on gear for Nikon D 750.
  • PhotobugPhotobug Posts: 5,751Member
Specifically, what do you need: lens, tripod, brackets, flashes, filters, etc?

My hunch is that one of the Moderators will move this over into a new thread.

Welcome Alex, I suspect your question can be answered easier if you share with the forum what you would like to accomplish with your camera. Photobug may help you by starting a new thread...Or you can start it yourself.

    Hello to all,
I have been into photography since my teen years growing up on an island off the coast of Maine.
Fast forward about 30 years getting married, having kids and a career; I rediscovered a renewed interest in it when a friend gifted me with a copy of PS in 2004 which I applied to film scans. Then I bought a refurbished D70s in 2007 and things have just escalated from there; as my wife can attest.
I concentrate on landscapes; of which Maine has an abundance. Along the way I have exhibited in commercial spaces with framed pieces and have been published. I have sold some and two years ago, I had my first solo art gallery showing. I participated in an art fair last month and met a local collector who bought four pieces to hang in his home.
So things are coming together. Nice way to transition into retirement.

Jerry (7pilot) From the great Pacific Northwest (Walla Walla). Only been into DSLR photography for a short time due to my wife's P&S getting stolen on holiday in Prague when we lived in Europe from 2010-2014. Went back to our home in Germany and bought my first DSLR. A D5100. A bit underwhelming I know. But it has served me well. Added a D7100 a couple of years ago and just last week ordered a D500. So I'm good for a good long while. I'm retired Air Force and will start roaming the USA in a motorhome next summer after the wife retires.

Good for your...retired and roaming the USA. Remember, with these good cameras its all about the lens. Buy one or two FF (full frame lens) and it will make those cameras shine. The 70-200 f/2.8 is great on the D7100 and D500. You don't have to buy the newest 70-200E lens, the 70-200G will save you some money and you will be very happy with the results.

At this point I have a micro Nikkor 105MM F/2.8 AF-D, Tokina DX 11-16 F/2.8, Sigma DX 50-150 os F/2.8, and the kit lens from the old D5100 18-55. Was thinking about adding the 70-200 F/4 after wife recovers from the camera purchase.
