Nikon D800E, Nikon 80-400 VR lens-- image issue

I've noticed that when I use my 80-400mm Nikon zoom lens, especially at the higher magnifications, there seems to be artifacts on vertical edges (like distant fence posts or around the edges of a setting moon) even within the areas of focus. Any comments would be appreciated. I'm using the newest 80mm-400mm VR lens, Nikon D800E camera.
