D7100 Overheating ???

I bought a D7100 and used it for 1 hour with the live view on while I did settings and messed around with the effects. It got hot on the bottom right of display, the bottom of the camera also on the right and onto the black portion to the right of the display.

Returned it to exchange. Came home an did the same for 15 minutes and it already was starting to get warm.

I have a D5000 that I can use for hours and it doesn't even begin to get warm. Is this normal for the D7100 or is it likely that it's a production issue with the line that this store was selling? I have had 3 nikons and never had it happen.

Let me add I also tried it with the screen protector taken off the camera

I would like to go somewhere else and buy another because I love the camera but can't use it hot like that if that's just the way that model works when using live view

The newer cameras can get rather warm when using liveview for extended periods of time, nothing usual in that.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

I would believe that but they started warming up after only 15 min and the first one was beyond warm after an hour which seemed sort of over the top to me. I would think you could not notice it only after 15 min. Thanks for you reply :0)

Sounds normal. My D800 gets warm after 5-10 minutes of using liveview or recording video.

These cameras were not designed to be used in liveview for extended periods of time like that. Cameras are computers, they get hot when used in such a manner. It's no wonder your camera is hot after an hour!

An hour of live view sounds to me like a lack of sympathy for the gear. I mean, why would you?

When doing video work it's not uncommon to have Live View on practically the entire day.

I suppose you would then, so it must be ok. I don't shoot video so that possibility escaped me. Wow, that's a long time. How long do EN-EL15 batteries last?

    Always learning.

yeah I suppose it WOULD. Geesh, it's common sense to me that if they are going to put on live view, video, editing through live view etc., that an hour isn't long at all to have it on. For it to become hot after that amount of time is shoddy to me. Thanks Ade!!

Someone on another forum said "I just spent four hours birding yesterday and shoot 400+ stills and about 30 minutes of video. Camera was warm but not hot." so that tells me alot too. I didn't actually even hit "Live view" for the most part, mostly I was in the menu changing the settings and using the "Effects" for the pictures I had taken which was less than 10. The entire amount of time the camera was ON was about an hour. Actual choosing of LIVE VIEW is something I often use with my D5000 to take macro shots as often times I need to use my articulating screen rather than the view finder.

I'd be interested to know what the ambient temperature in your location is? Is it already warm?

I have shot video with cameras like the D7000 and D800 and they did get warm to the touch after a while, but the ambient temperature was 23C or lower.

No I actually was sitting in my living room. I'd say around 70 f I have done much longer stents with my D5000 using the screen and or live view and it doesn't even begin to get warm so that's what caught me off guard

Oh well, I just wondered if anyone else had issues with the D7100 getting hot when using the lcd screen to edit menus settings etc., and/or live view for videos etc., Thanks everyone

Hi SDH628. Got my D7100 two weeks ago and spent a long time in the menus making adjustments for my needs. Probably 20 minutes on time and it did not get warm or hot. A week ago I shot 20 minutes of video at a wedding and it did not get hot, a little warm but nothing I was concerned about. This weekend I shot a birthday party, no video, and it was fine. No heat and during one segment the camera was on for over an hour and there was not heat. I have image preview turned on so I see every picture after taking them.

I was impressed with battery usage during both events. It's a great camera.

Thank you very much Photobug, that's exactly what I've been trying to find out. So, knowing it was normal to have it get hot after just a little, I will pick one up from a different source. I loved the camera and was so discouraged

Nikon said the camera should NOT have been getting hot like it was so now I feel better about returning it. They said they will research the issue and get back to me. I have to find a different source to replace it with another :0) Looking forward to it. I was looking at the D600 but the guy at the store told me to wait for the D610 beacause of oil spot issues. He said he bought a D800 and had the same issue so I guess no matter what model you purchase you can get some issue

If you want the DX format, stay with the D7100....but I am prejudiced.

The D610 has been announced and shipments are expected this month if your interested in the FX format.
