    @Spraynpray: You can use the setting to preset your focus to the finish line press the shutter and wait for the runner to run in to focus - boom you get a picture of the runner as he crosses the line - trap focus.
    @henrick1963: Pressing the shutter button halfway with AF-S/focus priority does exactly the same thing doesn't it? :-/

    Sort of, but it is much easier to use trap focus. With trap focus you simply pick a focus distance, and stop focusing. You hold the shutter button down, fully depressed. When the subject moves into focus, bam shot taken. The biggest advantage is, no movement induced by pressing the shutter button. This is particularly helpful with telephoto lenses.
