Absolutely, a high mp crop sensor for shooting small objects with 300mm and longer lenses puts more megapixels on the subject. The D7100 is great and hopefully the D400 will be about one stop greater. I have a 16mp D7000, didn't get a 24mp D7100 and am still waiting patiently for a D400.
My point being, there are many things that could make your images many, many times better than the difference between the D610 vs. D800. Too many times people think they are limited by the body when actually they are limited by only believing an image is just a body and a lens.
Back in the day when I shot SLR's there was a lot of emphasis on buying good glass. Today, too many amateurs spend more money on the DSLR body and less on lens. I help 2 to 6 people each year in buying their DSLR or upgrading. I keep bringing up the point that the lens is the limiting factor and the amateurs just don't get it because they don't print larger than 4 x 6".
A number of pro's and advanced amateurs bring this up on the various forums but I just don't feel it's mentioned enough.
