Welcome to NRF. Do you handhold the 600? I do know that the 400 when handheld gets very heavy after only a few minutes, but for some subjects I find it is easier to handhold and then rest than to use any support as the support gets in the way of shooting certain subjects.
I hand hold my 400mm F/2.8 my 600mm F/4 and my 800mm F/5.6 And I pay for it the next day. The 800mm F/5.6 weighs less than my 600mm F/4 but its a bit longer so the leverage is slightly worse on me. Lots of Ibuprofen in any event.
And let me say this about that. The 400mm F/2.8 is an amazing lens... So is the 600mm and the 800mm. The 800 really has a special quality. I can tell by the the way the image looks that I shot it with the 800. And teleconverted to 1000mm... Well what can you say about a custom tuned teleconverter...
I cannot imagine how a 400 could be better than the previous version. However, if I win the lottery, I will do a test of both ) What I find so amazing about the new lens is the nearly 5% improvement on the MTF chart at the 30 line level…. and for only a few thousand dollars more…
Maybe a friend in Denver will purchase this new 400 and give us a heads up….???
And, my next lens might be the next generation of the 200mm f/2…with a new AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E III….. this will be my "300mm f/2.8" as well….

+1 if Denvershooter get one :P
The 200 f/2 and the 300 2.8 are both in a class of their own. A teleconvertor is a nice addition, but it will never make on lens into the other. The performance is noticeable; specially when I have attache the 1.7 or 2.0 III (new version) to either of my 70-200 or 300 2.8.
Best solution: buy the now you want for what it is....anything more is a bonus.

I bought 400 f/2.8 got a great deal on it new 2014 model. Now that I'm retired own it for about 3 months now. I all so own 300 f/2.8 what a pleasure to shoot with these primes. I tried shooting the 400 on monopod with a +2 converter, nope! You'll delete more than you keep. So I do the same as someone else said, open the trunk set up the tripod grab your water & sit your ass down. Better yet, I all so bought RRS long-lens-support. That's the cats meow for this lens. The front mounting plate way up front mmm, long distance to that sensor, like a diving board. Ive tryed resting my left hand on top of lens to dampen any movement or mirror slap, nope! I think you you definitely need long-lens-support. 300 f/2.8 I love this lens it's not heavy. Walk a round all day long on a monopod. Out all the lenses that I own the 300 f/2.8 with +2 converter my favorite for wildlife lens. the tripod that use for the 400 Gitzo seriers 3 with Wimberely gamble head so no movement with set up.
