I just have to say this if you're looking for a travel lens? Those shots indoors at restaurants and other dimly lit places really do benefit from f1.4. Using flash can destroy the artsyness of photos, at least to my aesthetic sense. A kit lens is useless then and a 35/1.4 becomes the perfect tool. Seriously, the photos we took in Italy last year... maybe I should dig out Lupe's photos... hang on. Here's her Italy photo album from last year. I took about half of the pictures, actually.
Thank you for sharing that album. It is indeed a wonderful advertisement for a 35mm lens!
In the recent past I have tended to travel, on a general vacation, with The D200 or D300 and my 18-200mm plus a 35mm f1.8 lens.
I went the Micro 4/3rds route for a while. It just wasn't for me. Whilst the camera sizes and lens sizes were great, the low light capabilities were not what I wanted. I therefore went back to an APSC and Full Frame sensor Nikon gear.
This is changing. I no longer have a clue what to travel with. I now have too many lenses to go on vacation with. I might stick to my 18-200mm and the Sigma 18-35mm, or replace the 18-200mm with the 80-400mm. I know people hate the 18-200mm, but I love it. It is a great vacation lens; perfect for getting that photo of a cat having a pooh over a cactus in a plant pot.
