Hello,

So my initial plan was to go with a D800, but having tested one out, I hate it for sports! The AF is just really jittery compared to the D3, and feels all over the place.

So I tried a D4s and I'm in love! The AF is insanely good, it's fast and always ready to shoot. I shoot Equestrian events mainly, along with airshows and Formula One.

My initial plan was to get a 2nd camera body, as I want to be able to use multiple lenses at the same time without having to change them all the time.

So it seems getting the D4s would be ideal. However, I've had a think about how much money the D4s actually is, and what I could get for the same amount.

I currently own:

Nikon D3
Nikon AF-S 70-200mm F2.8 VR
Nikon AF-S 50mm F1.4G
Nikon AF-S 85mm F1.4D
Nikon AF-S 600mm F4 VR
Nikon AF-S 1.7x TC

I could potentially add for equal money:

Nikon D4s

or

Nikon D3
Nikon AF-S 24-70mm F2.8
Nikon AF-S 300mm F2.8 VRII

I love my D3. I struggle to find anything wrong with it, although it might be getting a bit old in terms of low light photography, compared to the D3s/D4/D4s, but it's a solid performer for anything else. And having been told to invest in glass before bodies, I almost feel like I would be better off doing this and maybe getting a D4s towards the end of the year.

Your thoughts?

Thanks,

Ben

Hi Ben....welcome to NRF. If you are seeking to save some capital, you may want to consider getting a D4 vs the D4s via the secondary market. I can assure you the performance will not disappoint. The saving can go toward your new lens. I find the 24-70 2.8 to be an amazing lens; moreover, it happens to be my favorite lens. With respect to the 300 2.8G VRII, I'm currently ready to buy one, however, it is our understanding that Nikon is in the process of introducing a newer version of the this lens later this year. Hence why a great majority of authorized online retailers (B&H, Adorama, Amazon) have the 300 2.8 on "back order." So, I would recommend that you wait on this lens for the time being.

    Happy shopping...
