I hit the camera store yesterday (yet once again -my third time in as many weeks) to check out the D750 -this time with a plan. I cranked up the ISO settings and put the camera through some paces chasing my wife around the store. I was simply amazed with the low-light capabilities and resolution in comparison to a D300 are just astounding. The pictures out of the camera have so much light -even when the lighting is poor and tack sharp -even at 6400 ISO. The auto focus is wickedly fast and much more accurate. I'm also getting my head around the build quality -it's really quite decent -a few nits here and there, but so far I'm pretty impressed and I love the fact that it weighs less and is a bit smaller than the D300. The D750 just feels more responsive and quick and I prefer the layout of the controls to that of the D300 -especially for changing the focus settings and I'm sure I'll be a much faster shooter.
Lots of cool features to play with too -the tilting screen, wifi (although the Nikon app needs some work, it's still pretty responsive), the intermittent timer, time elapse exposure, etc. etc. -probably a bunch of stuff they have on a D3300 -but coming from the D300, it seems light years ahead. Sure, a few gimmicks, but some of the stuff is quite useful and very welcome.
Well, as I awkwardly stated above -I'm now a proud D300 sell out. Yes -I'll probably miss a bit of reach, but all those images I missed due to poor light, will more than make up the difference for me. Thanks for all the comments & suggestions -I'm now off to spend the day shooting and I'll post more impressions later after I spend a few days with it.
@OldGrey: Congratulation are in order. I have a feeling that the more you use the D750, in more favorable settings and such, the more it will please you.
A few things to consider getting, if you do not already have one: 1) Good FX lenses (not sure what you have in that line), 2) Additional battery or better yet get the battery grip 3) 3 or 5 stop ND filter for those shoot @ 1/4000 results in to much blowouts.
Lastly, I second the sevencrossing comment: Welcome to the world of FF.

sevencrossing -I couldn't resist your post and just for kicks I grabbed my 70-300VR and took a shot of a Heineken bottle about 25' away in direct sunlight at ISO 200 f8 250mm (giving the D300 the best chance it could) vs. the D750 in DX mode. I don't have a camera plate yet for the D750 (so no tripod) so I just rested both cameras on a bean bag to take the shots. Not a perfect test, so I repeated it a few times to make sure I was getting good results. The D300 certainly did admirably, but zooming in you can see the color rendition and resolution in the D750 is clearly superior. Much better greys/blacks -the D300 looks out of focus by comparison. It'd be interesting to see how it compares to the D7100, but either way, I'm happy to report I took a step in the right direction. I think I'm going to be quite happy with it.
I've actually been shooting mostly FX with my D300 (85 1.8, 50 1.8, 35 2.0, 70-300VR and just picked up the 18-35MM). Funny thing is, weight was one of my big issues for making the switch and my new FF kit actually weighs slightly less than what I was using before! I do a lot of hiking, traveling, etc so no big 2.8 zooms or battery grips for me -I carry too much weight as it is.
Yep -I need all new replacement batteries, cards, and a new camera plate for my ball head. All the little things that were nagging me not to make the switch. I was glad to see my Hood Eye is the same for the D750 so that saved me 20 bucks!
The ND filter is a probably a good call, although I generally don't get into those kind of crazy shutter speeds that often and my circular polarizer usually helps get me there when I do, but thanks for putting that on my radar.
I was lucky. About the time i was really ready for an upgrade I stumbled into a incredible bargin on a lightly used D4.
As i had already a good stable of FX lenses, i was able to jump in to the FX world quickly. Only thing i really miss is a bit if reach as a 300mm was my tele. A 2x converter is the short term answer for that as I seek out a 500 or 600mm.
I recently augmented that with a D800 and sold off the remaining D300s i had. And so far I miss nothing about it. If i am seeking lighter kit, i go DX crop on the D800. I have still some workmto do on my shot discipline but that is a good thing for all of to develop probably.
My wait for the D400 led me to a pristine D800E, with the intention of shooting in DX. Well, that went out and I use FX, although the 36 MP do require a long time to find there way to the card....compared to the D4....LOL
@Msmoto said: "with the intention of shooting in DX. Well, that went out and I use FX,"
I was willing to be a $100 you would switch from DX to FX after you started using that D800E. No surprise here. Keep taking those pictures and uploading them to PAD. Enjoy it.

While waiting for the D400 I got distracted by a D7100 and a D750. Looks like I'm sorted until the proper DX/FX mirrorless bodies hit the scene. I guess Nikon will have to throw and F mount adaptor in the box when that happens.

I'm still waiting in the wing. But I'll make the decision after what I hear from Nikon at CES. And the closest things to a "Fabled" D9300 / D400 is spread out across three bodies Which are D7100, D610, D750. If the rumored specs of D7200 holds, Then D7200 will be the flagship "Prosumer" DX body. I'm doubtful about D9300 / D400 will ever see a light of day.

I know it's a sad situation. I had the D300 for 6 years and have had the D7100 for 15 months. The D7100 was an interim camera for me. Didn't have some of the pro feature controls and FPS and buffer size but the improvement in AF system and image IQ was excellent for me. I have had the D750 2 weeks but so far I love it.
My suggestion, keep saving money and wait until after the Feb photo show. If a D9300 is not announced then decide if you want to move up to FX or remain DX format. Then go buy the D7200 or D610 or D750. IMHO I really doubt there will be a D9300. You are so close to Feb you might as well wait until then then devise where you want to go...DX or FX.

I sold my D300 last year, but I do not remember it as being smaller than my D810. Is my memory faulty?.... H
I don't own the D810 but I held one and it last weekend and yes your right...the D810 is larger than a D300. Knowing this group someone is gong to go look up the dimensions and prove me wrong. LoL

I don't want to jump into FX at least not yet but D610 @ $1400 is awfully tempting. Anyway as someone who shot with Sony Cybershot then Canon Rebel T2i albeit briefly, I need higher IQ, ruggedness pro control, and the weather sealing. I didn't want to get the original 7D or 70D and was waiting until now
My dad owned a Nikon SLR from 60s which is now mine. So you could say I'm 2nd generation Nikon shooter too.

You need a D800 or D810, you will find them to beat had my D800 out in all weathers and despite dropping it on the pavement twice, it remains completely reliable. As for IQ they can only be beaten by high end medium format cameras more ruggedness more control D3 D3s D4 D4s On a tight budget? will sell you my D700 for the price of a D7100 yes the D7100 probably has better IQ but the D700 has the same pro controls as your D300
