AF-assist illuminator will not work it you are using AF-C. I will work if you are using AF-S or AF-A, be it single AF point or all your AF points, regardless of Aperture Priority (A) , M (full manual), S (shutter priority) or full Auto. Hence, check your AF mode. If you do not know where the AF mode button is, it is the center button you push that's labeled .AF . M located next to the lens release button.
