@Rmologic How was the focus speed/accuracy? Could you compare the AF to other lenses?

Hi All I tried the new 300 F4 lens with the 7100 with and without + grip and a TC-20 in the booth today. Wow was it light and sharp. with out the grip and TC it was less front heavy by a bit from my 70-300. Very nice feel. I very much liked the feel of the D750's new grip and thumb rest. A good improvement from my 7100. IMHO. Cheers
Great feedback @Rmologic. Nice job checking the lens with and without battery grip and the TC20. Good feedback on the new battery grip for the D750.

Hi Mike I tried the 300 with and with out the TC 20 and it was zippy. I did not have the time as I had booth duty in my booth ( #ony) and was not able perform an A/B vs say the 70/200 f2.8 or f4. Sorry. Sadly they would not allow me to put in a SD card and save the images.

Looks pretty good. Too bad I won't get one until a refurbished comes on the market a long time down the road. Maybe when I find more time to get out and shoot wildlife.

Wait until you see the DxO scores and the Photographylife review. Your fever is going to get red hot and your credit card is going to take a huge hit. LoL :D =)) If this turns out to be an exceptional lens like I expect, it's going into backorder.

If it's really great maybe I'll get one to keep as a pure 300 and just leave my 300D with the TC on it as my bargain "400" mm.

You're sneaky NAS; very sneaky. ;)

Only a few NYC places have the lens in stock. I expect as the favorable reviews are released the backlog will get huge. @dissent - there is no cure to NAS when it strikes. =D>

From what I heard is once you catch NAS it's hard to get rid of... and apparently its contagious as well ;)

I am sure my wife could treat the symptoms of NAS if it got out of hand.

    @manhattanboy - oh yea it's contagious.

@WestEndFoto - Very very funny. LoL. Please keep your wife away from the rest of us. :))
Don't tell her about NAS, hate to see her treat your symptoms. LoL

Oh, I will keep her far far away. She has never heard of NAS and if I have anything to do with it, never will hear about NAS.

Enough waiting for the Sigma 150-600/5-6.3 Sports: 4 months since my initial order and the next "possible delivery date" not before March. Cancelled and ordered that lens and TC17E II (there's no TC17E III, right? couldn't find one). Anyway, looking forward to delivery tomorrow.

I have been doing biking photos like his for a while now for "street" photography all with 35-200mm FL's. I have some nice ones and the last few ones of his look better as it fills the frame but cuts the hands off. I takes me a few tries to find the best placement and anticipate the biker to go to that spot and it always helps if there is a puddle or obstacle in the path and they go to the sweet spot.

Looks like AF and the group AF could be a killer setup.

Your correct there is no TC 17E II.
Did you look at the TC 14E III?
The TC 17E II was not recommend on the old 300mm F4 in low light photography, especially when shooting BIF.

    Don't worry, @Photobug: http://www.nikonusa.com/en_INC/IMG/Assets/Common-Assets/Images/Teleconverter-Compatibility/EN_Comp_chart.html

And btw. I was looking for TC17E III (not II). There is a TC17E II.

In bright sunshine, D810 can focus through an ND 3.0 filter, which is 10 f-stops less than f/2.8 (close to f/90). For only 40% more FL I can crop as well - and since it's a prime, I'll have to. But I don't want to burn another half grand just for 40% more range.

I think the missing recommendation was more based on a while ago, there were not much cameras able to focus at f/8, like Nikon says: "† Autofocus is available only with cameras that offer f/8 support. " I do not intend to use

I have been doing some research on TCs as well .. and for TC14 there was v1, v2 and now v3. For TC17 there has only ever been V2 so I would also be considering TC14 III over TC17 II.

But you are right its quite expensive .. IQ wise you probably wont notice any degradation on the TC14 III. I would think you would see some degradation on the TC17 II .. but the 300mm is very sharp and it may not be noticeable.

I think I have read that on some lenses the TC20 III performs better than the TC17 In terms of acquiring AF, but overall the TC17 usually does perform better.

I have a TC20 III I use with a 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II. I have not used it much for lack of time but it seems to be fine. I will know more after spring gets here.

@heartyfisher I get the feeling, the TC17E II is a bit a coward decision (suits me :D ) for the ones who don't want to loose two full stops and do find only 1.4 × FL nothing to burn a lot money for.

The lens itself appears to be a nice one. I already saw the fresnel produced highlight look, when pointing at glasses or metal cylinders, the highlights really get nervous. In darker rooms and handheld it has troubles to focus, mostly because it's difficult to keep it steady. Being on a tripod and focus is just as fast as expectable.
