+1 ggbutcher regarding the touch screen. I like you want to get out there and shoot. Not sure if the touchscreen is going to add much value. I do worry about bumping it with your nose and firing the shutter or perhaps that screen is not up there most of the time. Will see when I get my hands on a D5500.

Maybe a touchscreen would be good on a mirrorless, but I would not want one on a DSLR.

A touch screen can eliminate needless repeated button presses, such as for changing ISO, or other quick settings, particularly on lower end camera that don't have dedicated buttons or features like the auto zoom to 100% button press in image review. It's also far more efficient for choosing the focus/zoom point for liveview and video shooting.

If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

KR has already posted a review of the D5300...this is what I dislike about his reviews. No one has the camera yet is posting looks like he has shot pictures and makes quality comments. Why? Okay off the soap box.

In the middle of the review is a good comparison chart on the D5XXX DSLR's.

Here is his dumb review: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d5500.htm

And yet, some lazy editor of an obscure e-zine thought his review was worth sintethizing and auto tuned:

Touchscreen is ok in good weather when it is warm. How about when the weather isn't great or you have gloves on? Ever use your smartphone with gloves on? I am not a fan of touchscreens on cameras. I believe the android/Nikon point and shoot was a fail. But maybe they are trying to distinguish the camera lines by doing something different. If they keep it up it would force me to get one of the more pro bodies as I won't get a touchscreen camera unless it is the only option.

I was thinking the touch screen might be good for when you have to wear gloves. They make gloves that work with touch screens and I rarely have a problem with them and my phone. With a gloved hand, when I go to change focus points or press the OK button on my cameras, I often have issues. So I can see this being useful in the cold, although you have to take your eye out of the viewfinder either way.

Guess what...I was right. On January 6: I said:
    Price Error
I just checked the NIkon USA web site and B&H. Some one is wrong on pricing. Remember mail order places are normally a few dollars less than the SRP.
    Nikon SRP (suggested retail price)
    D55500 Body: $900
    D5500 + 18-55mm lens kit $1000
    D5500 + 18-140mm lens kit $1400
    B&H & Adorama selling price
    Nikon SRP (suggested retail price)
    D55500 Body: $896
    D5500 + 18-55mm lens kit $996
    D5500 + 18-140mm lens kit $1196

Just checked Adorama and their prices are same as B&H.

Could some one be wrong on the D5500 with 18-140mm lens. I expect B&H & Adorama to make an adjustment.
Both B&H and Adorama have changed the pre order price from $1196 on the D55 + 18-140mm lens to $1,396.95. Now this new price is in alignment with Amazon and Nikon USA prices.

Perhaps wishful thinking....I wonder if there will be a price rebate on the 18-140mm lens and D5300 like last year with $200 off? Either that or both B&H and Adorama made the same price mistake! I doubt it. Bet they there is a price rebate coming soon on multiple Nikon DSLRs.

I know the deliver date is supposed to be Jan 19, but has anyone seen any actual tests of the low light capability of the 5500?

@rmp - nothing on early test results for low light. The local dealer is trying to confirm when he gets them in stock. B&H is shipping on Feb 5th.

I just got a notice from my dealer in Germany that my pre-ordered D5500 "body only" is further delayed until (at least) end of February. Combos with kit lens are availabe right now but no "body only" boxes.
Here's me furious but who knows maybe that gives me time to cancel my order when more specs of the new D7200 come to light.
...and still not a single review out there even though dealers have them for a couple of days already :(

That comment about dealers having them is not applicable in the USA. Nikon has a special arrangement with UPS and all dealers with orders will receive them on the same day. Learned that from my local dealer. Of course, that is theoretical and some small shops in the middle of no where maybe a day or two later.

As if last Saturday, the local dealer expects inventory on Feb 5th.

Thanks Photobug - I was not aware of this policy in the US.
The reason why I pointed out the dealers was because even "digitalrev" announced the D5500 in stock a few days ago and they are Honk Kong based. Dealers in Germany also had them earlier but of course honored the official release day - I guess not to loose exclusive Nikon trade deals.
Anyways, the cat is out of the bag now so let's wait for the first reviews to hit youtube.

Your welcome. I see that on the main blog the big sellers in the US are shipping. Bet we see something on youtube on Saturday.

Today I got the opportunity to use the new D5500 with the base kit lens, 17-55mm. Initial impressions:
++It sure is small and fits in medium size hands very well
++As a D7100 and D750 users, the control layout is totally different. But for new photographers not a big deal and for those moving up from the D3XXX series probably not an issue.
++The flip screen is solid and I like the ability to turn it for those in front of the camera.
++Touch screen appears to be okay but I did not use it that much.

My next step is to take the wife into the store to confirm this is what she wants to replace her D90. I tried to get her to take my D7100 but lost that discussion. THe D7100 was too big for her. Got a feeling she is going to like that shorter base length and feel of the D5500.

If your looking for the D5500 + 18-140mm lens, B&H has a $200 rebate dropping the price to $1196.95. No price drop on the D5500 + 17-55mm lens; $996.95. Body is $896.95.

Alrighty - so it seems nothing was done on the movie side for this camera so I cancelled my D5500 pre-order today. Hm, unfortunately the D750 doesn't have competitive video quality for it's asking price (aka 4k) so I guess I'm finally done with Nikon and start looking at the new Sonys and Panasonics.

The guys at The Camera Store TV have found an improvement on high ISO performance on the D5500 compared with the D5300 (comment at 8:12):

I see at least a 1/2 stop improvement in their sample. Does it means there is meaningful improvement at the RAW level or it's just the usual JPEG engine fine tuning that Nikon always "finds" for each iteration of their products?
  • CaMeRaQuEsTCaMeRaQuEsT Posts: 357Member
Imaging-resource.com has just taken their first sample shots on the D5500 and they indeed show a significant improvement in noise levels at ISO 12,800 compared with the D7100 (worst), D5300 (better) and D3300 (best) when viewing virgin NEF files with no noise reduction applied. In fact, it doesn't look too far from the same sample shot taken with the D610. This is all, of course, great news for those who are waiting for the D7200 which should even improve upon the D5500's showing to a level just below the D750's

Had a play with a d5500 in the shop with a 18-140 lense. Compared it with the d7100 and it seems to me to lock AF faster than the D7100. Seems like a nice kit!
