I have an SB80DX. I'm sure when I put it on the D200 it would detect it (show the bolt symbol in the viewfinder). I could also have sworn that I used the camera in either A or P mode & got decent results.
But when I put it on the D800 I didn't get any connection symbol. It triggered, but it was generally way over exposed. Eventually I put the D800 in manual, set the ISO to the flash & speed to 1/320X. But in A mode I got awful results as well.
Before any smart asses tell me to update - it's not happening immediately. I generally use flash for family snapshots & a bit of outdoor fill flash, so it's not much used.
I tried the built-in flash but found it underexposed.
Any tips/comments?

If you really need to look, Ken Rockwell has a blurb on it.
You may want to get a SB-600 or a SB-700 instead.
Thinking about it, 1 reason for overexposure was I left the diffuser off - I usually leave it on, except for bounce flash.
Isn't it funny? When I started out, all flashguns were manual & you waited for your film to come back & see how many you'd f@**ed up.
Now I'm apparently lost if it isn't all auto!
I put the SB80DX onto the D200 in P mode & the flash ready light comes on.
But on the D800 - nothing.
The flash really only works in Manual mode.
So, anyone want to buy an SB80DX?
