I have the AFS 300 F4 lens which I love, but I am wanting a bit more reach for a interest in shooting the local birds. I shoot with a friend who has a Tamron 150-600 and seems to do real well with it. Just wondering what others experience has been using the TC 14 II teleconverter . I really don't have the where with all to buy a new lens right now so am wondering if this might be a viable option? I am shooting with a D7000.

Are you talking about the f4D or the f4E lens? I can speak to the f4D lens as playing very nice with the TC 14EII .
Nasim has a nice write up about it in his review of the D lens.

    A nice combo, imho.

Basically the TC14EII works well for tracking birds in flight. Also check on photographyife.com for articles on the TC14, TC17, and TC20. They are very good and there are comments specific to each lens.

I have the TC1.7 and plan on adding the TC 14EIII since it better for BIF tracking than the 1.7TC.

There's like zero difference between tc14 and tc14II on the AFS 400 f4. This work as close to perfect as I've ever seen with a converter. Forget the tc20 I II the tc20III works well; however, This really needs a tripod or monopod to stabilize it with an D800+ I've used it handheld with a D3s with a good rate of success.

    Have fun...

Sounds like this may a decent way for me to go, now to find the teleconverter, I see they are a discontinued item, so the used market is the only way.

Not sure what you meant. Nikon still makes TC14, TC17, TC20. Go to their web site to see the current model number.

And yes, there are used Nikon TC's on eBay. I have even seen them on Craig's List here in the US.

I should of been clearer, It appears for my 300 F4 AFS D lens I need the TC14II and that has been discontinued
I read that to use the TC14 III I have to do some different settings and it is not really approved for my lens.

I don't see the TC 14E II discontinued, but backordered.
