Well, went ahead and did the update. My 2 Watson batteries still work fine, showing proper charge percentage and battery life. Shadow banding issue is still there and so is the green cast issue. Since I never use 720p, this update does nothing for me.
Wishful thinking from my part: since this firmware solves the "horizontal lines" issue while recording 720p (I wonder how many people do actually use this video setting), I was hoping they might have dealt with shadow banding, too. 1.04, maybe? I think that if we D7100 users make enough noise Nikon might yield and port to the D7100 the part of the D7200 firmware that deals with this and the green cast issue. Remember that Nikon has said that both bodies share effectively the same sensor, and I really do believe that the D7200 is re-using all the same hardware from the D7100 except for a smaller fab version of the same processor which accounts for the additional processing prowess, deeper buffer and extended battery life. Unless, of course, the solution for the banding issue significantly slows down the processor, then Nikon will have a real point for not fixing this issue.

He's not saying that anyone should arbitrarily try that, but said it would be good if Nikon could take that part of the D7200 firmware and apply it as an update to the D7100 (if possible).
Currently, it's impossible to port D7200 firmware to the D7100 simply because Nikon hasn't yet published any firmware updates for the D7200, least hackers or other unscrupulous people go transforming D7100s into D7200s for free.
I suspect there is a whole bunch of hardware processing (expeed4 vs expeed3) in between D7200 images and D7100 images. I am sure they can "port" that processing into the D7100 firmware update but I think it will slowdown image throughput by 2 to 5 times.. ie probably not a good idea...

I really doubt it. Nikon has said that the expeed 4 processor on the D7200 is unique to it, same thing they said about the expeed 4 on the D4S, and that came out as actually being the same expeed 3 processor on the D4 perhaps running at faster cycles thanks to a smaller fab chip, so I believe it's the same situation between the D7200 and the D7100. I doubt there is more than 50% more processing power on the D7200 compared to the D7100.
