I prefer adjustable spanners (zooms) lol! :D

I'm one. To me 50mm on FX is the 'jack of all trades' focal length so in my mind it is also 'master of none'. Uninspiring as is 35mm on a DX of course. Both get the same response from me.

    yup .. sigh ...

50mm is just another focal length, it's either good for the shot you want or it isn't.

Well go try shooting all day with a 150 F2.8 prime ... ;-)

    LOL

I have not shot a 50 on my FX, but didn't have a problem with the focal length on my DX. I'm lazy and didn't try out the Nikkor 50 1.8g this weekend on my FX, I just know I didn't like it on my DX because my 85 is such a sweet lens.
I guess renting or borrowing the 24-70 would help me figure out a lot as far as IQ which is the main concern I have over prime vs zoom. I do think that there are times where a 24-70 would be more practical than switching up zoom.

I'm going to test the 50 I currently have and the rent or borrow the 24-70 to see what I think.

50 on DX is 75 on FX so you may be surprised.

Kind of confusing as if you shoot the 50 on the FX it is really 33.3 mm DX.

@tcole1983 a lens that is made for an FX camera can be used on a DX but because of the crop factor, a 50 mm FX lens put on a DX body has a field of view as about 75mm.

I still have not used the 50 on my d800 yet because I was so unhappy with the IQ on my d7100. I have a shoot tomorrow so I will test it out before I make any further decisions.

@skyeyes70 yep I know. Just wanted to say if you shoot the 50 on FX it is comparable to 33 mm on DX. Personally I dislike my 35 f1.8 so I can imagine 50 on FX wouldn't be my cup of tea either.
