Not criticising, just wondering & asking - please don't get me wrong ...
The image looks heavily edited/saturated/noise-cleaned for some reason. Was clarify on top of JPEG ( + in camera settings ) or was it on RAW ? I was expecting to see ISO 3200-6400 even more in EXIF but apparently that was not the case.
The photo was edited only using the clarify control in ACR. I didn't change anything in Donald's camera. What you see is just what came out of the camera. The ISO was 400. This was shot from the groups evening dining table. When the camera was handed down to me I turned and shot. Well I did try to compose as best under the conditions and lens. De-clarifying can destroy some noise at the expense of some sharpness. Once that was done in RAW it was saved as jpg for viewing. My real interest in the D500 is for night field sports or indoor sports. Hindsight tells me we should have shot some people shots on the beach in the dusk hours.
If anyone has found any useful function for the IN CAMERA clarity control I would like to hear about it ...anything + seems to burn the highlights and the - makes it softer.......
For those who want to play with some D500 RAW files I went out around my neighborhood to get a few shots (JPEG and RAW). Lens was Sigma 35 Art at f5.6. Shutter varied a bit but doesn't matter. The real focus is on ISO performance and shadow recovery at various ISOs. The JPEG setting I am trying now are Standard with sharpening +5, saturation +1 and no other changes. I am searching for JPEG setting I like for out of the camera JPEGs. I realize
Thanks for moving these Andrew. Here are a few more shot at high ISO for people to play with. These were taken of an eagle statue sitting on a cabinet in a dark corner of my office. All shot with the 70-300 f4.5-5.6 G VR lens at 300mm and f5.6. You can ignore everything other than noise in JPEGS and RAWS shot at these ISOs: 6,400, 10,000, 16,000 and 25,600. In camera high ISO noise reduction for JPEGS was set to normal. The Raw files are attached.
Still just trying things. This is the D500 with the old 60mm f2.8D macro lens. Shot and edited in JPEG, 360 ISO, f11, +0.3 exposure compensation, 1/400th sec. Kousa dogwood bloom and then center at 100%.
Absolutely wonderful. The D500 has brought a smile back to my face after 18 months of struggling with a Canon 7D Mark II. In the end I dumped the Canon gear and joined the dark side. AF is simply brilliant. Tried the D500 with a Nikon 200-500 at RIAT at RAF Fairford against a fairly grey and gloomy sky. I am really pleased with the results.

Here's a quick 12.5 min time lapse as a 5sec 4K video.
