Recovering deleted photos

Accidentally deleted some photos off my Nikon J3. I've tried to use multiple photo/data recovery programs (including a couple recommended here) but none of them are recognizing my camera as a drive. What do I do? I really need these photos!

Last time something like this happened to me I tried various commercial programs, but in the end, free open source did the trick.
I used PhotoRec on a Ubuntu LiveCD.

If I don't mix up the event, I think I had formatted the memory card, but still got all my videofiles that I was mistakenly sure I had imported....

@quinncollard You need to take the SD card out of the camera and insert it directly into your computer, then run the recovery apps.

I was able to figure it out! Inserting the SD card directly into my computer works.
