Nikon f1.4 E primes - what do you want and expect next?

The 24/35/50/85 1.4 primes were not designed for 36mp bodies. Which is why many have shifted to Sigma Art glass.

After receiving the Nikon 105mm f1.4 E and seeing how sharp it is, even on my D810, it was clear to me that Nikon would be focused on upgrading the performance on their professional primes.

Now we have the soon to be released 28mm f1.4 E. Arrives here in the USA late June.
They won't be cheap, but I welcome these new lenses. The sharpness of the Sigma Art, but with the Nikkor 1.4 character that we know and love.

My prediction is something that you may not have thought about....
The Nikon 50mm f1.4 G is a horrible lens and it's long in the tooth!
Therefore, I think it would be a slam dunk for Nikon to bust out with a 50mm f1.4 E.

We were not expecting them to give us a new 105 1.4 E. We were not expecting them to give us a 28 1.4 E. So I bet they will follow that program. Furthermore, neither Nikon or Canon has a SURE THING 50mm pro prime.
It could attract a lot of Canon shooters. The 50L is a great lens, but it's just like the 58. Cult-like support.

28 1.4 E
50 1.4 E
105 1.4 E
Not a bad idea right?
Nice, updated, three lens portrait kit. Perfect for portrait and wedding shooters.
You just want to roll with one lens? 50mm on FF is where it's at!

For me, I expect the 50mm to be the next prime added. What do I want? I would say the 85 1.4.

What do you think the next 1.4 E prime will be?
What do WANT the next 1.4 E prime to be?

I wouldn't mind a 50mm 1.4E. I've debated on whether to get the 58mm or not, but I do feel like it's a specialty lens. I should probably rent one. I'd really like if they updated the 35mm 1.4. The new 28mm is really tempting, but it's super expensive. Looking forward to seeing more samples.

I agree b/c the samples I've seen are not anything to I can relate to.

Not sure what to expect, but the one thing I do expect is that prices will stay expensive.
    Nikon D7000/ Nikon D40/ Nikon FM2/ 18-135 AF-S/ 35mm 1.8 AF-S/ 105mm Macro AF-S/ 50mm 1.2 AI-S

Yep you got that right :D I really want one Nikon 1.4. Been looking at the 35mm 1.4G for a long time. Was hoping they would update it to look something like this 28mm. In fact I probably would have pre ordered without any hesitation. Can't wait to see more from this 28mm though. Who knows, maybe it's would be worth it.

I've been using the 58 for awhile... while the focal length is slightly more constricted than a 50, I can use it for many different types of portraits, among other things.

Ok you got your primes lets have a decent 24-200 f4 Zoom without a IQ dip in the range .....

Sounds expensive if they make one.... the supered up 24-120.. will cost.

Unless maybe if it comes with with a full frame mirrorless... ie if it didn't need the retrofocus elements the design will be simpler. (and the IQ better !)

Hmm... maybe we have hit upon the Killer Mirrorless FX combo !! Nikon !! MAKE IT HAPPEN !!

An extensive range of mirrorless only lenses .....can you see that with nikons cash strapped situation. As someone said we have 100years of glass this cannot be replicated in a few months. A few M lenses and an adaptor if at all. Heck Hogan keeps banging on about lack of DX glass.....

That would be surprising (although it's the surprise effect you're after) to have a 50mm 1.4 E that is comparable to the Art or the quality of the 105 1.4E.

The 58mm 1.4 is playing that role. High price and high quality. This is already the lens. Nikon needs a cheap 50mm 1.4 and I'm pretty sure it sells very well. A 50mm 1.4E would cost way too much (assuming the requested quality is given) and would be competing with the 58mm (and open the market for the Yongnuo 50mm 1.4 that would cost 25$).

The next 1.4E will be either UW (18mm?) or 135mm (but Sigma took the market first so they may delay (but I'm holding to buy the Art since I'm expecting a Nikon answer that would make me regret the buy of the Art 135) or simply go with an update 200mm (1.8?).

I'm not sure we'll see a 135mm 1.4E that would be a huge freaking lens. The 105mm 1.4E is super chunky as it is. But I could see a 135mm up next since the current 135mm has had a really long run. Regarding the 50mm 1.4E I think there's a possibility. Yes we have the 58mm 1.4G, however it really does seem to be more of a niche lens and I could see a 50mm that surpasses the current 50mm 1.4 and still be less expensive than the 58mm, but who knows.

Yeah, I think a 50mm 1.4E that had 90+% of the Sigma image quality, was 14oz or less (half the sigma), and cost around $550 ($100 more than G) would be popular.

I agree, I have a feeling it would be a little more than $550 though given the recent price hikes, but if it's $550 I would take it :D

They could maybe go as high as $650, but past that it'd lose its price advantage vs the Sigma, especially if Sigma does one of those $100 off sales. Nikon's advantages are size, weight, and price. If they can boost IQ without seriously affecting those advantages I think they'll have a winner.

  • I would add a much improved 50 1.4 to my collection. But looking at the new 28mm f1.4 price, my guess is that a new 50 would run around $1000. As long as it was great wide open, I would pay a premium. i am not enthusiastic about focusing issues with the Sigma "art" series, so Nikon bring it on.
