As the D850 is my first DSLR Sans pop-up, I have to say I resented having the cost of an SU-800 added to the D850. I have always enjoyed pop-up flashes as commanders and never had any issues about weather proofing because I either don't shoot or put a plastic cover over the camera to keep the weather off.
Perhaps HankB, but I saw a test where the weather sealing was improved with no flash. Less or no moisture got in the viewfinder. I don't recall where I saw that.
yes it has popped up which has alerted me to an error or I could have just knocked the flash button ...I usually wack it down and carry on..Spray you want a Godox X1 setup for flash ..brilliant and cheap.
Now we want someone who upgraded from a 7100 to a 7200 !!
I had the D7100 and D7200. If you shoot RAW, the D7200 got rid of the D7100 banding issues in the shadows, so you're able to use the whole DR of this amazing Toshiba sensor. If you shoot JPEG, the D7200 has the improved EXPEED4 WB, skin tones and no more green cast under artificial lights over the D7100's EXPEED3 calibrations. So I'll say that, IQ-wise, the D7200 is a very meaningful improvement over the D7100. Add on top a deeper buffer and a more refined menu and you can't go wrong with it. It's basically a perfected D7100.
Don't do RAW and don't shoot birds in artificial light and while I understand the buffer I don't have buffer problems so am still not convinced
Based on the studio test scene photos on DPReview, the D7200 appears to have a better JPG engine than D7100. Images are more detailed and noise is better controlled, particularly at higher ISOs and lower light. D7200 also has about 1/2 stop better dynamic range at ISO 100 vs D7100.
Well I cannot see much difference except colour variation. changing from Tamron 150-600 to Nikon 200-500 made a vast difference in image quality but I don't see changing to a D7200 making a noticeable difference . I have one D7100 with about 30,000 shots and another with 1800.. Sell which or wait .think I will wait. I also feel that with an FX its easier to find the birds particularly when in flight but I need more than the 36mP of my D810 for POI and even the D850 is marginal.
I usually like to sell my cameras when they get to about 30,000 or the value just drops fast. Imagine my surprise when I checked the older D7100 to find it had 43000... So its time to go ..New D7200 ( £550 ) ordered, sell old about £425.
Its OK just give the wife the newer 7100 and she wont even notice....
Absolutely. If I was still shopping for my first DSLR I think it would be a no brainer. But as an upgrade I’m still thinking I’d be better off saving my money towards something full frame.

If you go full frame it's helpful to get full frame lenses to fully take advantage of the sensor and that's extra cost. Just something to keep in mind.
A D7200 would definitely be a kick ass first camera. I would have drooled for one when I first started off...
... and now I'm sad haha. I got my D40 kit with 18-135 in 2008 for around $1000. A new D7200 now with the 18-140 kit is also around $1000 now and that's a steal.
That D7200 is a beast and for that price .... One thing stays for me, the noise, when it is very dark. In LR you can do things, but ISO 800 is the most for me then, 3 stops extra is ok of course. Nothing to do with the camera, but only with the smaller sensor. All this with good glass on it.
PS. Mostly I have it on M and I always forget what I set on U1 and U2. Seems to be outside my 10 minutes short memory, have to work on that one, because it is so handy.
User Ton changed to Ton14, Google sign in did not work anymore
Meaning if you keep ISO no higher than 800 you can bump up the exposure and/or shadows up to 3 stops before the noise becomes bad? I'll keep that in mind.
My D7200 came in Wednesday. So far I am pretty pleased with it, but the controls are a bit of an adjustment since I got used to the D5500 touch screen controls.
