I asked the same question 3 years ago. The Nikon Buying Guide on this website says "wait". I should have just bought it when I had the chance.

    https://forum.nikonrumors.com/discussion/4484/why-does-the-buying-guide-say-wait-for-the-300mm-f-2-8-vrii

See this post from 2015. If there is a rumor about a new one, it would have been posted on this wegsite.

Rule of thumb for buying lenses, if you need it now buy it. If you don't, maybe wait a while.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

There should be a new model coming, but you never know these days because of the rumored new mirrorless mount.

The current 300/2.8 is of course excellent btw.

It has been more than two years since the last post. Yet I just looked at Adorama and it says backordered. Is this lens no longer made? (Obviously a new E version has not come out).

It’s likely being shipped on a by order basis. Meaning you’ll not get it without placing an order.

I'd be pretty surprised to see an update it this point.

A friend of mine rented the 300 f/2.8 G vr ii last week and I took a couple shots with it. WOWWW! I couldn't believe the detail with my D850 when enlarged to actual pixels. My shots of the same subject with my 70-200 f/2.8 E looked blurry in comparison. Roger Cicala of Lens Rentals (whose opinion I trust more than anyone else on the internet) says it is probably the sharpest telephoto prime ever made by anyone. New ones are so pricey (and Nikon refurbished only a few hundred bucks less) but I may get a used one (which is still not "cheap" by most of our standards).

I was at a photo shoot sponsored by Tamron and a local camera dealer and one of the shooters let me use his 300mm F/2.8 for a few shots. OMG......a really sharp lens. At that time I was shooting a Nikon 70-200mm lens of caged lions. I'll second McFotoFool's comments.

Having rented it for a week a few times I can also testify to how amazing it it. Even with the 1.4x TC mounted it is still one of the sharpest lenses Nikon has ever made. The only thing they could do to make it better is reduce the weight, IMO.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

Among bird photographers the Nikon 300/2.8 is the only lens I've regularly seen used with a 2x converter. It is one of the sharp ones. But old and heavy.

Sounds like me. Except for the "sharp" part.

My wife tells me all the time how sharp I am. She refers to it as prickly, Same thing, right?
