Which 105mm?

Hi All,

My ol' trusty Nikon 105mm f/2.8G is in need of replacing. I have used it for portraits, and macro a few times. However, I am in doubt; should I get the Nikon 105mm f/1.4E or wait for the new Sigma 105mm f/1.4 ART? I'll continue to use it for portraits, and keep the old Nikon 105mm for macro. The USD600 is not a dealbreaker...

My 105 1.4E is almost as good as my 400 2.8E. Thom's review and Photography Life's review say it all. It would be no contest to me, even if the Sigma was as sharp and a thousand cheaper. But everyone has to make their own decision.

I would wait for the reviews of the new Sigma. But that's me, I often prefer Sigma when it comes to lenses. I've only read positive reviews of the Nikon lens though.

I have the 135 DC 2.0 and it is a great lens. However, the 105 1.4E at 1.4 is sharper than the 105 DC 2.0 at 1.4. If budget is an issue, though, I might consider the DC.


I could never figure out what the appeal of VR on a portrait lens is however. I would just use a 70-200.

Personally, I would look hard at the Sigma before going for the Nikkor.

Thanks for the input. I have looked at the DC lenses, but if that was what I wanted, I’d get the 135mm.

I will await some reviews of the Sigma, and then see if I can borrow/rent one of each for a day before making my decision.
