AW120 Fails When Closing Battery Door

My wife has an AW120 camera she purchased to take pictures when snorkeling. It's 2 or 3 years old now and I'm certain it's out of warranty.

She came home from a recent trip complaining the battery wouldn't charge. She said she'd charged the battery overnight, then when she went to use the camera it was dead. I assumed the battery was toast and purchased a new (Nikon) battery. It charged ok, and when I went to close the case, I accidentally hit the power button, and the camera came on normally, except it gave an error warning to close the battery door.

I powered off the camera, closed the door, and now the camera was dead. Opening the door, the camera works.

Recharged original battery, same behavior.

I played with the camera some more, and the problem is that once the door is closed, the camera stops functioning.

I should add that a no point in the trip had the camera gotten wet or soiled. It was when she was going to use it snorkeling that she discovered it was dead.

So, any clues as to what may be going on here and how to fix it?

Thanks in advance!
