Yes, good point. The air has to be clean and not too warm and the lens must be very still, but it is interesting to have the possibility. I look forward to reading the reviews of this lens.

If anything I would get it for fun. This is a wee island off the coast a few miles off with the 500mm. A 1200mm with a 2x extender on a good day and I'll be peaking in the windows.
Reliable rumours are that no less than 5 big whites next year and one is a 1200/8. Reliable enough to have predicted the 600/11 and 800/11. Canon do not have a nice roadmap, but do have patents galore.
Actually I did wonder when people complained the f/11 lenses where fixed at f/11, would you ever go for more DOF? Same with a f/8 600mm there, it would make sense to be fixed at f/8. I have almost always used a super telephoto wide open.
I think a 600mm f/8 would be about £2500 perhaps? Depending on build and it would have to be PF or it would be very long.

Yeah Canon said they left the aperture unit out to bring the cost down. And as you said one very rarely stops these lenses down and even when you do I can only think of one time I went past F11. And that was on a 70-300 which isn't really the same thing.
Could the 180-400 beat them both on price and quality? It is pricy but if it could replace two or three lenses the price may not be so bad. Reviews have it at a very good quality.
I am considering that 200-500 or even the 70-200 with the 2X instead of the 500PF with that 600 getting on the roadmap. A native Z super tele would be worth shoving the £2500 saved into the bank and build up the extra £10,000 the big boy will want.

I own the 200-500 along with the 70-200 and have had excellent experience with using a TC1.4X on both lens. I purchased a TC1.7X and no complaints with the 200-500. Have not tried the 1.7 on the 70-200. Image quality is good from my perspective. A definite price savings than the 500PF.
