Lens could get a lot smaller, lighter and cheaper

A company called Metalenz has developed a way to make lenses much cheaper (25-50%) and smaller (50% or more) by developing micro lenses on silicon. At least that is the gist of what they are developing. Sounds like the first wave would be targeted at larger sensor cameras and then cellphones once they get to smaller silicon processes.

    Its a bit like the halfway house of Fresnel lenses , replacing a single lens with circular lenses each angled to improve the image. The next step is thousands of individually designed micro lenses ...
