Depth of field on Z vs F

Here is something I am ignorant of and hopefully one of you can give a definitive answer. Since mirrorless Z bodies have (I think) a shorter distance between the lens glass and the sensor, does this affect the depth of field? For example would a 24-70 f2.8S lens (on say a Z7ii) have a shallower depth of field than a 24-70 f2.8E lens (on say a D850) assuming all settings are the same?

It will not affect DOF.

Neither will it affect exposure.

I guess it was wishful thinking on my part that Z would have shallower depth of field. Oh well, thanks for the replies.

Dof is dependent only on aperture and distance.

A F lenses mounted on a Z camera will have exactly the same characteristics as if it where mounted on a F lens. Including but not limited to the DOF, focus speed, focus accuracy, sharpness, contrast, and colour. Assuming the sensors are the same, and well we have the Z7 and D850 using the same sensor and Z6 and D780 using the same sensor so it is easy to prove.

Or you can try just now with your F mount camera by pressing the live view button and then taking a picture to see if the extra air between your lens and sensor for longer will result in a change in DOF.

I did hesitate before postning my comment .

WestEndFoto: In my mind the sensor size doesn't do anything to the dof of the photograph. It is similar to cropping. I think you will see this if you shoot in fx and then the exact same shot (no moving) in dx crop mode.

Yes, you are correct. But there is alot of confusion here. I think that Thom's article cuts through that.

Hey if you halve the focal length you need 4x the pixels to maintain the same resolution ....go argue about that one

If you have a D850 and always crop your 500mm image by 1.5X then the D500 gets the same result. No equivalence required, it is a pre-cropped image. Same light gathered, same f-stop, same shutter speed, same IQ. However, if you can fill the D850 frame then the IQ is markably better. I have no idea why when crop cameras are discussed we talk about changing ISO, distance, focal length, etc to get them to match when the reason for a crop camera is to get more pixels on bird.

Its because to get the same shot on a DX you need to move back or reduce the focal length which increases depth of field. The reason for a crop camera is that the sensor is cheaper to produce. POI depends on the lens used and the pixel density on the chip. AS the pixel density on a D850 and a D500 is the same its just longer lens more POI. Now if you used a 20MP m4/3 with the same lens more POI,
