Is it possible to make the display time longer on the D5000? I can't find anything about this in the menu or manual. I did change this on my old D60 without any problem.

No, the playback can only be turned on or off according to the manual.

Page 157 auto off timers. The custom setting will allow you to adjust individual settings vs just short/med/long
