Canon already has a 70-300 DO/PF lens. Very 'spensive though... Double the price, half the size.
The Canon lens is one of my favorites for that system. It is much heavier than one would expect though, but it is soooo nice to have a 4 inch 300 zoom.
Regardless, I am so pleased to see Nikon coming through and updating lenses with the PF elements and VR. About FREAKING time is all I have to say.
+1 retread. My hunch over the next 5 to 8 years we are going to see PF in a lot of "long" lens. Size and weight reduction are valued by many photographers.

Hearing lots of rumors now that this lens could be released with the new D5 or D4X bodies in the last quarter of this year. Honestly, I never thought that a 24-70 F2.8 with VR would even be possible. This will be one pricey lens. A new version without VR would be $3,000 but add this type of features:
One Phase Fresnel & One ED Element Nano Crystal & Super Integrated Coating Fluorine Coated Front Lens Element Silent Wave Motor AF System Nikon VR Image Stabilization (4.5 Stops) Internal Focus, Manual Focus Override
and probably Lighter & More Compact than Predecessor
Nikon won't make a $4k 24-70 because there is not a market for it. They have always consistently targeted "just a little higher than $2k". I don't think you have to worry about the lens being $4k.
A PF 24-70/2.8 with VR.... may make me want one......however, I think as I noted in December.... probably not with VR. Note, this is only an opinion personal to me.
It seems the PF elements have trouble with shooting into the sun... if true, that's something to keep in mind. You wouldn't probably do that with a long lens, but a 24/70... different story

Yes I am sure you are right and that 4K prices it out of reach for many, but I am certain it will be higher than the 2007 release 24-70, which I believe went for about $2500 if I recall? Probably a safer bet would be to compare the price to the cost of the 70-200mm VRII, which started off at $3400 and now has settled around $2400 about a year later.
Is there a source about PF lenses having difficulties into the sun?
Its that "blooming" issue I mentioned in the 300mm thread.. I have read that the canon fresnel lenses have the issue. Still it seems that Nikon may have solved it to some extent as the Nikon 300mm only has it slightly and its very minor compared to the canon lenses. I think it was mentioned by a reviewer of the 300mm who also had the canon fresnel lenses.

And they released a new version of NX-D with a software "fix" as well. From the main blog:
A PF Flare Control item has been added to the Camera and Lens Corrections palette. - This item can be used to reduce flare (ring flare, circular flare, etc.) caused by bright light sources in images captured with compatible lenses.

Mine almost lives on the camera when I am inside and will stay there as long as it keeps working.
It will be interesting when Nikon puts PF and FL both is some really big lens.
