Well I cheap'd out on my vacation and signed up for a California cruise. I'll be spending a day in San Francesco, Santa Barbra and San Diego. I could rent a car in anyone or all of those locations so my question is what's your favorite place to photograph in those cities. I should be able to drive 100+ miles in one direction if I need to. In San Francesco I'm thinking of driving north along the coast route 1 or explore the Golden Gate National Recreation Area over to Rodeo Cove. If weather is bad I'll take photo's of wet ducks.

Tips where to go please???

I'm leaving on September 20, Sept 22 = SF, Sept 24 = SB and Sept 25 = SD.

From SF, consider heading south to Big Sur. In SF, if you're in the mood for architectural porn, the glass buildings in the financial district are great. Santa Barbara is great, although I'd head up into the hills.

San Francisco, at night the city from Treasure Island, daytime… all the people…. and of course the Cable Car, Fisherman's Wharf, and that famous Lombard Street http://www.sftodo.com/lomabardcrookedstreet.html

    Just my thoughts...

In SF, the ferry ride to/from Sausalito at sunset or early evening as the lights turn on is hard to beat for cityscapes.

@framer. Timing is going to be the big issue for you and the route you chose to take on your way down south from. SF to SB and SD...given your time line. Send me a PM with your number when you hit the states and we will talk about some idea I have for you. Moreover, if you like, we can meet in SB and go from their.

DO NOT GO to Horton Plaza in San Diego. At least with the camera. GREAT, different architecture
could make for wonderful shot, but they don't allow photos! (I have been almost politely asked to stop) Would hate to waste the time.

Marin headlands north west side of the GG Bridge. Great view of the bridge and the city in the background. Just before sunset and until past dark can be great even if the fog comes in (depending on the fog level). Could be windy and cold. Bring a coat even if it's a nice day. :-h

I live in Carlsbad, which is just about 35 mins north of San Diego. If you want to shoot down here, I'd recommend heading up the coastline along the 1. Head to La Jolla area and work your way north until you hit Carlsbad if you'd like. Plenty of very good scenery here to shoot.

I've been to San Diego a few times for conferences. Top 3 so far include:
    1) Stars & Stripes USA11 American Cup Yacht tour (a few hours in the San Diego Bay. I was lucky on my tour and a naval carrier and submarine came in during the trip). Also located around Shelter Island, which has quite a nice view & several marinas.
    2) Travelling to La Jolla and strolling the beach
    3) San Diego Zoo

From SF drive you might want to drive north to Santa Rosa and then west to Bodega Bay. It is beautiful countryside.
I'm off to Lompoc this weekend. Maybe a little too far from Santa Barbara for you trip, but also a nice spot.

I always found myself stopping every 20~30 minutes while on the coastal highway route 1 down the coast. Every photography needs to take this trip once in their lives. The rewarding shots are endless in all types of weather and different light. I envy your trip Framer you will have a blast! :)>-

@Golf. Oh that's awesome, I had no idea. Yes, I'd be 100% down to meet and if framer wants us in tow! that would be cool too!

    @Jon & Golf.

If you would like to meet in San Diego that would be cool. The ship is there Thursday September 25, from 8am - 5:30pm. What do you suggest, ideas?

I could likely make myself available that day...

@Jon, @Golf, @ framer: amazing. I've been in San Diego 40 years. That is four of us. (but I'm moving next week)

Now, while I realize this is not part of this thread, it is an interesting finding that 4 of us live close-by and didn't know it. I'm sure this is the case for others in other parts of the country.

Hopefully we can figure out how members can better link up in the future

@tganiats: Glad to hear that. For the record, framer is visiting, he dose not live in SD.

I have been in SD since 1979 myself. Well it sure looks like we will all be meeting on the September 25. Once we get the details of where framer is going to doc, then I will make a few recommendation to meet at in the morning. If that is Ok with everyone.

The ship will dock the 2nd pier to the north of the USS Midway. WB st & North Harbor Dr I could arrange a car rental depending on what we decide to do.

Car rental...what for, you do realize I'm in the personal transportation business. I know exactly where your boat will dock. I have assisted hundreds of clients from the cruise ship terminals. Send me a PM with your contact number when you can and we will go from their.

Any chance we can get some others involved? Would be kind of cool to have a NR meetup coincide with this of some kind.

I'll be there with my hand gun, have your gear bag ready to be turned over to the proper authorities. :P

Maybe it's just me, but this kind of info seems better suited to PM's rather than the public forum.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

@PB_PM: The topic at hand is about a "vacation" destination question. Those that have been proactive in the topic are members that 1) have been or 2) maybe consider going to one (or all) of destination the OP has put forth. Personal message's would be a good choice for sharing our phone number, address, etc...but not for points of interest and the like.

Personally, I welcome your company in attending...and by all mean bring as much fire power as you like; I like taking action shots of people/things in motion.

I am new to this site as a member, but have been a lurker for a while. LOL! I would love to meet you all and shoot with you. However, I will be in Italy on September 25th, hopefully getting a couple of days shooting the fall colors in Tuscany.

I have been in San Diego since 1955, now living in La Jolla, so I know it fairly well. Maybe we can meet up another time.
