Battery grip for D750

I pre-ordered a 750 and now I need a grip. I've had grips on my bodies for 25 years and can't imagine going without for too long. The question is, how long does it take for off-brand manufacturers to produce grips? I have been happy with my zeikos grip on my D300 which was $100 vs $350. I can't see spending $370 + battery for the Nikon grip. I have never bought a body right at release time so not sure if I should just bite the bullet on the Nikon. Thanks for your thoughts.

IMHO you should buy the new Nikon Grip for the D750. In various forms there have been discussions about people having issues with non-Nikon grips.

Sure it's a big delta in cost but in my humble opinion, it's well worth the cost. I used the Nikon grip on my D300 and it never let me down. I thought about buying a non-Nikon grip for my D7100 but after seeing all the comments about running down the battery in the camera, twisting and coming lose it's not worth it for me.

If you do plan to spring for a real one, be careful where you get it, there have been very good fakes lately.

Since the D7000 came out the fake grips are getting much much better. I've used a fake grip for a few minutes, and although the rubber does not match the camera's rubber, it wouldn't feel off on a Nikon camera.

I would be a little paranoid about shorting out the camera though, especially one you've just dropped 2.2k on.

I've got Vello grips on my D90 and D7000 and can't really tell any difference between them and my genuine Nikon MB-D10 on my D700. No way in heck a grip is worth $350.

I agree with you BrentBusch and what I have on my D300. It has been fabulous, including giving me the extra frames/second that you get with the Nikon grip. I did pre-order the MB-D16 grip, figuring when the knock-offs come out I can look at them. If they are as good I'll sell the Nikon grip on eBay. Used they still go twice as much as the off-brands. That is the one advantage of going Nikon vs anything else is the resale. All good feedback. I just wonder when they will hit.

@BrentBusch - you need to run a search on battery grip issues on NRF. Then you will understand why so many recommend the Nikon battery grip. Lots of battery issues and non matching surface alignment issues.

I have checked around and no one has a ship date on the MB-D16.

    +1

If you are going to go with a 3rd party grip, wait a while and see what unfolds. Don't be a sucker.

A very good friend of mine got himself an after-market D800 battery grip after readying some review of those that had gotten some real bad ones. His has worked so far, but everything about it is 3rd party. Even the battery that goes in the grip is different (it came with one that fits). Moreover, he never knows how much life the grip has. That info does not come up on the top LCD because that information is not available due to OEM battery. Needless to say, it is also not weather resistance, so he has to take it off should there be some good rain fail.

In short, you pay for what you get...the choice is yours. Know this, $200-$300 is pocket change when you are about to moving into the FX/FF world.

+1 on this. With the release of the D7100 onward Nikon has done some changing of the grip commands and it has taken 3rd parties a long time to get the grips right. Many have battery selection issues, miss-fires, etc. What brands etc. seemed to work in the past, just don't anymore. I know people like saying Nikon is ripping people off, but their grips work 100% of the time and have zero issues. I have seen most people go through 3 or more grips (and eating the cost for each) before they finally find a good one. They could have just bought the Nikon one for about the same and never had to mess around with returns etc. and been happily shooting for months.

By all means if you find one that works 100% please share for others. Someone always has to be the test monkey - it just won't be me - at least in this realm.

You are better to buy a cheaper camera with a Nikon grip than buy a nicer camera with a cheap grip.

I just rip the guts out of my third party grips and use them to carry spare ENEL 15 or flash batteries. The one on my D800 just has the tracker in it in case it gets stolen ...My no 4 spare camera a D3200 has a D5200 grip and it the only one I trust to work

Anyone any idea when the grip will be available in the Uk?
Can't understand why it won't be available when the body will be..
And while I'm on one, why isn't there one 750 available in every stockist as soon as Photonika has finished ....

Thanks. I was completely unaware of the change in programming. My 3rd party for my D300 has been perfect, but didn't realize there was a change since around the 7100. I do wonder when Nikon will ship theirs. I can't imagine it will fall far behind the bodies.

Can't I just carry an extra battery for my Nikon D750? That's what most do, right? I mean, most "normal" users. Do most prefer a battery grip? Seems like it will make the carmera much heavier.....

Yes that is the most economical approach - extra battery. I like the battery grip because for vertical shots it is easier to hold the camera and the shutter button is on the grip. It's just easier to shoot. Of course you are correct, it does add weight to the camera and in my mind the improved grip for verticals off sets the added weight.

I prefer it for vertical shots because of where the shutter release is and I don't have to torque all around. I also like the thumb control joystick when vertical. I spend a good amount of time taking vertical shots, so I guess that's part of it.

+1 that the battery grip makes vertical shots easier. Forgot about the joystick built into the battery pack. If you can afford it it really is the best way to shoot.
