How to get the right lens hood for a hard to find lens?

Hi,

I have a AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED. It uses the HB-29 hood. Most people don't realize there are 2 versions of this lens. The common one is "black" and the rare one is "light grey". I have the light grey one below:
Nakrani Studios: Other &emdash; 20140227_144116

The black one is Manufacturer #: 4119(I do not want this one.) I want the grey one (Manufacturer #: JAB72911).

Nikon USA is telling me they can't get Nikon part number JAB72911. I have only found one place in Europe that carries JAB72911; however, they do not ship to the US.

Do I have any other options to get Nikon part # JAB72911. ?

    Msmoto,

I get allot of strange looks from Canon people, it is quite funny actually. They stare at it before approaching me and asking about it... its missing the red "L" series ring on the end.

Sevencrossing, Thank you so much. Amazon UK will ship to the US. I knew someone would know how to get a replacement lens hood for this lens. The original one cracked and is no good anymore and after hunting this lens down, I can't face putting the black lens hood on it.

    Sevencrossing,

Somehow I don't think I would de-face the lens hood with spray paint unless I am getting the lens taken apart and re-painted from scratch and re-powder coated. Then the lens hood would get powder coated also.

You can try to get an off brand lens hood that screws into the filter mount.

I guess it would be a pain if you use a lot of filters, but at least you can use it with other lenses.

It may very well be that you will have to use some type of modified hood, HB 65 or HB 48…There is always some type of make-shift hood, bent cardboard and Gaffer's tape, useable in a practical sense, but not very attractive.

    Msmoto,

Nikon USA came back and suggested a "black" HB-48 in their email to me. The hood looks identical to the black version of the HB-29. I went ahead and ordered the Nikon HB-29 in light grey from Amazon UK. I want the real thing. It should arrive in 5 days from the London area (It seems like Amazon has some fast shipping between London and the US.

    Pistnbroke,

I did see those JJ HB-29 replacements and thought about them for a moment.

    Seven,

I don't know anyone that could take apart my D700 and lenses and re-paint everything in Military colors, or some strange color, lol.

There are those of us who like to have things look as original as possible. I am one in many cases and with this beautiful gray lens, I suspect I would want the "original". Kinda like my old "F" bodies, I would not want anything but original on them.

I guess the next question is, if I want to send it in for it's "Annual" calibration (which most of us don't do) will Nikon USA re-calibrate it (at my cost) or do I have to send it off to the other side of the world for 6 months?

If their is nothing wrong with your lens and is working just fine, don't have anything done to it...period.

Having said that, Nikon service centers will work on your lens and they will charge you, given that it is not a USA model. But again, if you are not having any issues with your lens, just keep enjoying it...don't let a tech touch it.

Nice one Squamish, that's new. Normally the powder is applied electrostatically until melted so I'm thinking that it is the pre-heating that causes the powder to 'stick' until the localised heat is applied. I wonder how tough the finish is, and it obviously can't be applied to many plastics as they have a lower melting point. would work on a decent quality lens hood OK though although I bet the paint on the OP's hood was traditional liquid over a primer.

Well they arrived (that fast from the UK). I ordered 2 of them just to avoid this mess in the future. Out of the 9 Nikon lenses I own, I had never had a lens hood crack and become un-usable. In this case because these are hard to find where I live, I picked up a second one.

Interestingly enough, Nikon Support and most places on the internet call these "light grey" but it is clearly marked on the box.... "Silver". Not sure where the difference comes from.
