Makes me think about the D7000 vs D5300 thread we are having ! .. but on the higher end ! now that I can get the D800E for the same price as the D750 it does seem a valid question as to which is better value.. if price is out of the equation.. I would think the D800E is better right ?? no ? why ?

Both the D800/D800E are mechanically very noisy which for me is a big big consideration for work at weddings and I personally dont like the memory system prefering the U1 U2 system. 24MP is quite enough if you are not going below 28mm but once to get to 16/17mm you need those extra pixels. for me its D810 with a 17-35 or D610 with a 28-300 because I am here to make money not spend it. So at present would not buy either.

While I have not shot with a D750, I can say the D800E blows me out of the water…. And, as a skeptic, I had to see the difference between my D4 and D800E. I cannot say there is a lot of difference in perceptible sharpness, but the image has a different quality, I am guessing this is like comparing the D800E with medium format. The higher MP count gives a more "full" appearance to the image, especially in the subtlety of colors and tonal rendition.

Either this or I am making this up in my head…. :))

It all depends on what you shoot
For landscapes, shutter noise and the lack of U1 and U2 are not important nor IMHO can you have too many mp
image quality, is what landscapes are about and for landscapes, the D800E wins

If you shoot a lot of hand held and want a competent all around camera, then a 750 is the way to go. The 800e is a camera that almost requires a tripod for best image quality. A note to Msmoto, I think you'l find your comment about the D4 to be as valid and perhaps more so concerning the 750.

All of my shots are handheld. All of my shots are sharp. I use a d800 a d a d810 and just shoot 1/2x focal length. this is such a pervasive myth.
    +1
same here I only use a tripod for long exposures, and composite shots were the camera must not move between shots

yes but with the refurbish price of the D800E being almost the same ..the price does not play a role any more. A D810 is different and there has been many threads on that. I am keen on getting a D750 but there is a D800E to consider as well..is it so much worse than a D810 that the price is the same as a "dinky" D750 with "non Pro" build? especially when we are expecting a pro DX next year( maybe ;-) )

Unless you off to a war zone I would not worry about build quality
are you looking at replacing the D610 or D7K
    are looking at new glass?

I will probably replace the D7000 with the D7200 when it arrives (or the D9300) ..I am just lusting over the D750 or D800E (or keep my D610) .. at the moment.. :-) trying to make up my mind as to which is better .. D750 or D800E

Sure it is, but the OP is asking a question that excludes that consideration. That is the OP's privilege.

Plus, if you are a professional, think that a more expensive tool that is mission critical for thousands of hours of shots is better, but balk at spending an extra thousand on this tool, you are either not making enough money or have a very poor business sense.

    @ WestEndBoy
Regardless of whether you are a professional or not. I do not think one can ignore cost
Nor can one completely ignore new vs reconditioned

As ever, with all xyz Vs abc
If dependents on many factors, that OP's often fail to reveal

    The question seems to changed
non existent D7200 Vs non existent vs D9300 vs reconditioned D800E vs brand new D750

Putting my professional hat on. I would vote for a New D810, but that, at the moment, is not an option

If I was hearty, I would wait for a prosumer Dx with expeed 4

Good forum @heartyfisher. I can't believe the suggestion to wait for the prosumer DX with Expeed 4. Your question was comparing FX bodies...any way I am off my soap box.

The question at hand is the D800E vs D750. From my perspective @PitchBlack said it all:
750: If you shoot events, journalism, a lot of video, or animals.
D800: if you shoot landscapes, architecture, or in the studio.
Most other genres are a wash and should weigh image quality vs. weight and speed.

If your shooting in low light and any BIF, you got to give the D750 the nod. It's a tough question. If you do landscape shooting then you really should buy the D800E. Finally go buy both. =D>

IMHO...I have a different recommendation, ignore the D800E and go buy a refurbished D810 for $2609.96 at the Nikon Store. You benefit from the improvements from the D800/D800E to the D810.

Sigh.. The item is now a 12Kclick D800 for 1700 instead of the D800E.

And DX was never to be part of this thread. (I will be getting one anyway either D7200 or D9300)
the question is to decide if the D750 Features /functions is worth the D800E.(now D800)

I would go for a D800. The best allround camera ever build - that is until the D810 came around. I would not bust my budget to get a D810. Most would not see an improvement to the final image quality in the D810.

(Seeking cover from the D810 owners - some of them will surely claim night/day differences between D800 and D810 :-)

I recently swapped my D800e for a D810. I am not seeing any notable difference in IQ.

The difference I am seeing is in focus speed, particularly following focus in a continuos shooting sequence, burst rate is up to 5 fps (from 4), and buffer depth. Writing to flash cards is also faster.

In short, if one is shooting fast moving subjects like sports or wildlife, than the 810 is a useful but not critical upgrade. Otherwise the D800e is its equal.

For BIF or other wildlife, I believe that the higher pixel density of the D800 (16mp DX crop vs 9.6 of the D750) matters more than the fps difference, since the lens is never long enough I use a 400/2.8 and tc20-eiii, effectively 800/5.6).

    all IMHO.

@haroldp: No doubt the D810 is a better camera than D800/e. Better AF, silent shutter, FPS and a few other upgrades. But if the upgrades are not critical to your work then you can find lightly used D800/e for less than half the price of a new D810. That is a lot of money you can spend on other things.
  • haroldpharoldp Posts: 984Member
    @henrik1963

    I agree.

If one is not regularly shooting fast moving subjects, a used D800/e for less than half the price of a new D810 is a very sensible choice. Particularly If the savings let one get better lenses, then at a price point the D800e with better lenses will be the best IQ choice.

If I had not found some local Eagle and Osprey habitats, I would not have traded my D800e which I believe is the practical equal of the D810 for general photography work.

If I did a lot of event photography (I do some), I would be looking for used D800e's.

'Better' is only meaningful in the context of a use case.

The lower native ISO (better DR) and group area AF (more keepers) of the D810, will have an impact on IQ.

I just jumped on the late D800 bandwagon. Found a 6K for 1550.. Seems to track Ospreys pretty well to me. I am enjoying the bump in IQ. I find cropped to the same size as the D7100, the noise isn't much better, but the colors seem to hold up better along with the DR at higher ISO. I have not shot with a D750 and probably will not.

The D750 has group AF, just an FYI.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.
