If you have short pockets and want to photograph distance objects, perhaps this is a solution, equals 1620 mm at F5.6Nikon V3 Power equivalent Focal lens of 1620mm @ F5.6

Massive telephoto reach always seem attractive. BUT I think beyond about 400 or 600mm you would see a lot of image degradation due to dust, smoke, particles, humidity and mirage in the atmosphere.

    Looks like a 1v3 with FT-1 with TC 2x with a 300 2.8
The 300 2.8 and the 1v3 suggest that the pockets are not that "short" LOL.
The OP if needed should just rent whatever lens he desires and not have to worry about the big cash overlay.

I am trying to figure out what "short pockets" means.....as well....

Interesting, the point donaldjose brought out... atmospheric conditions are the real limiting factor in telephoto shots.

A project involoving a $1.5 million telescope and imaging the moon has so much atmospheric contamination my 400/2.8 plu

Well the old Nikkor 300mm F2.8 AF ED is ONLY about 2000. so i guess its not too bad for a 1620mm FOV
    I do like my CX camera :-) . I use my 70-200 F4 + 1.4TC with my V1 and its a really nice reach. :-)

Sorry Msmoto British sense of Humour, Long pockets means lots of money. I used this setup with a V2 but the V3 is seriously better, probably due to the 4 Expeed improvement. I said it before but the V3 is vastly better than predecessors, including noise and low light photography.

Here in 'merica we use the term deep pockets. Perhaps that may account for the confusion. :)

Long pockets is an uncommon slang for a tall person.

Wow...you learned something today. I thought most people knew that "long pockets" = "deep pockets". Your younger than I expected. LoL :-)) :-SS =))

Totally. Tried to shoot boats from a distance on a hot summer afternoon with a D800 +300f/2.8 + TC20. Very suboptimal results. Too much image degradation due to heat rising off the water.

Yes for that type of shooting you need to do it at the right time of day and year, when the temperatures are close to equal.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

A good lesson. I'm in the early stages of trying to plan an Africa trip about 13-14 months from now. Obviously early morning shooting from those distances is going to be preferable.

I do a fair amount of shooting with my Nikon 800 mm F/5.6 with and without its teleconverter (1000mm) and the atmospherics issue isn't that big of a deal if you think about what you are shooting, where and when.

Yes on 100+ degree days shooting down a half mile of asphalt track at noon you will have issues... At 8 AM when its 70 degrees not a problem.

Shooting birds at a lake with an ambient temp of 16 degrees and the water temp of 35 is going to be a problem regardless of what lens you are using...

    All temps are in F.

A fair amount of long tele shooting is typified by BIF where the subject is not that far away , but is small.
In those cases, atmospherics are less of an issue, and everything else matters.
