Is it normal for there to be three pre-flashes before the main flash? The whole process feels like 2 seconds before the camera takes a shot.

I rented it for the first time today. Just put it on the hotshoe, left it to TTL, and turned it on.

If the camera is set to fire a the modelling light, then yes there will be three. Another would be if you have red-eye reduction turned on, and the third would be the final metering before the final primary flash synced with the shutter.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

Modeling light as in the infrared AF assist? Is the red-eye setting controlled by camera or does the SB700 have one in the menu also?

    Thanks for the assist!
