Hey guys,

Just wondered what settings you would recommend using on a nikon d3200 with an 18-55 lens and 55-300. Wanting to capture some great images of the welcome to Vegas signs, the casino fountains and also the strip lights at night. Tried some settings but keep getting poo quality. I've not got a tripod with me :( tempted to buy one in New Orleans in a few days when I head there but I'll have to throw some clothes out of my suitcase. Thank you.

You have asked this question already the answer at present is about 10 down ..you just need to take the figures quoted and experiment along with upping your sharpness if you shoot jpeg and certainly not using Auto
Plenty of christmas lights in the town centres to practice on.

No problem ..a correctly adjusted P mode would be best for day shots and once you have the night settings sorted I think you will find they are all the same or just need a small adjustment. If you want I can pm you the settings I would use ..as you can see I have a D3200 for backup.

These questions always seem best answered by the suggestion that one try a lot of different settings, then decide for oneself the final image quality desired.

I start in night shots with manual settings which give me an ISO of 3200-12,800 with matrix metering. For people shots i like 1/160th sec if possible to avoid motion artifact.

However, for a night scene with lights, a tripod allows exposes in the 20-30 second range, great for having the scene with the people in motion...or not visible at all in some cases.

All must be given adequate trials and the ability to capture the lights as desired will determine a range of exposure. Another thought is HDR on a tripod, but with moving people this gives some unusual artifacts.

I have had a very interesting PM conversation with this guy and suggested how he set it ( I have a D2300 as a spare) One thing he will not be doing is using Auto .

Glad you were able to help him out!

The D3200 is a really good camera and there's an auto setting (night, sports and etc) for anything he'll encounter in Vegas in case your way doesn't work out.
