    I like shooting the tree with all the lights off except for the tree. I like a few second exposure with the aperture closed down enough to get the presents in focus. This year, I handheld a flash and manually triggered it to light up the presents in the foreground - I think around 1/32 power. I can't remember now. Had too many beers to get me through the in-laws visiting.

    Finally...I am really late in posting these.
    This is how NOT to take a tree picture...with flash. As my wife says, this is boring:

    Many people love taking a time exposure and not using a flash to bring out the bulb colors. This one exposed for 1.3 seconds @ F2.8, ISO 100 using a D750, 24-70mm @ 28mm.

    When I started this forum, i suggested that there is a 3rd method and MightyY captured that image...a time exposure with a handheld manually fired flash.. I love this combination because you get the best of both worlds. You get the colors of the bulbs and the packages are illuminated.

    This picture taken at 6 seconds F8, ISO 100, D750 + 24-70mm @28mm. About 2 seconds into the picture I manually fired the flash. I used half and quarter power, forgot which one this was.

    Adding the manually fired flash ads so much more than just a time exposed image. It really brings out the green in the tree besides the pop to what is under the tree.

    After taking your tree pictures be sure to move in close for detailed shots. Just don't shoot the outside of the tree but move close and shoot inside the tree. You may find this kid of image waiting to be captured.

    And remember you can zoom during a long exposure to produce this type of image. This one was 8 seconds long:
