New Nikon D810 user (ex Sony A7r user)

Hi y'all,

Max from Texas here. I used the Sony NEX7 and A7r for the last few years and really thought they were superior to Nikon's 7100, 800(e) and other Nikons I tried briefly. My friend that had a 7100 upgraded to the D810 and in December we did a side by side comparison with equally Imatested Zeiss 135mm Apo-Sonnars. When we got in front of a big wide gamut screen I was floored. The Nikon files were much cleaner and had far better resolution than the Sony.

Before I finally sell the Sony off I am spending some time documenting the differences between the Sony and Nikon and am blogging it about it.

The Sony A7r is getting trounced by the Nikon.

I've joined this forum to learn more about operating my Nikon even better.

On the face of it, it does not sound like spam, but I am just a member. Your experience sounds fascinating and really interesting. I really look forward to reading about it and hope that you pass Adam's "muster".

The d810 is awesome, but one thing I have found with mine is it will show you just how good, or bad, you lenses really are. I had to return a tamron 24-70 because it just wasn't sharp enough. I have Nikkor 70-200 vr ii and sigma art 50. Both are outstanding. I don't have the budget to get an otus, but tried both 55 and 85 at pdn in October. You have not seen what the 810 is capable of until you try these.

I can only agree with gmckeown, having used this combination D810/Otus 55 for over 2 months. It will interesting to see what new lenses, both Nikon and third party are announced to meet the 35mm challenge to medium format in what seems to be back to the old megapixel race again.

Nikon's 400/2.8 does a good job of that.

I limit myself to these lenses these days -

21mm Distagon
55mm Otus
85mm Otus
70-200mm Nikon VRII
135mm Apo-Sonnar
300mm Nikon F4 (latest version before PF)

It is VERY HARD to go back from Apo and Otus to other lenses.

I know, I should... but sigh. The $$ are starting to have an effect on my marriage and I am already committed to the next Otus.
