Hi
I have just received my Nikon D750 and although I have not had chance give it a thorough test, one issue that did occur was blown highlights. This occurs when using auto iso in manual mode. Has anyone encountered this problem

I have used it in Auto ISO in Aperture Priority mode, not manual. No issues with blown highlights from me. Give it a few days to let several other D750 owners reply.

Oh, welcome to NRF...from one member to another.

Same here.... 95% of the time I shoot in A mode with auto ISO up to 6400 and nothing is blown up (unless direct light)...
a week ago at the Chinese New Year, I Shoot fireworks in M mode at F11 2 seconds no ND... and almost all of the photos were good... just a couple with highlights but it was normal....

Many thanks for your reply. I will put it through it's paces and see. Other the highlight issue I like the camera a lot.

Have you set the base ISO too high
if you set the exposure time too long. or the aperture too wide it will overexpose

Blown highlights in manual mode/auto ISO would suggest that the ISO is set at its lowest by the camera, but the shutter speed is too slow or aperture too wide and the ISO cannot go low enough to compensate.

Try ISO 100, fixed, 1/100 sec, f/16 in sunlight. Also try same ISO and f/stop at 1/200 and see if the highlights are still blown.

Oh, yes, as sevencrossing just said a few hours ago....LOL :)) :)) :))

Just dropped my D750 off at the UPS Store. Going to be interested to see how long it takes for the repair and return. Plan to start editing vacation pictures this afternoon and will identify those images with flare to upload here.

Here are several images taken last week with flare that I believe are typical of what Nikon is addressing in their advisory recall. One or two may have been me but the others were definitely an issue in the camera. This first one may have been me not controlling the bright sun on the beach.

This one taken inside a museum:

Slight adjustment to the above image to reduce/eliminate flare:

    Comments welcome.

    More flare issues:

Another inside shot. Hope this is not me. Granted light coming thru two windows is tough but it should not be this bad:

Even moving and changing the angle did not eliminate the issue:

The first shot on the beach is just normal lens flare, you can tell by the shape, nothing to worry about. The other two at the museum look like D750 recall flare. The others, are neither here nor there, seems typical for the lighting situation.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

That is what I though of the beach shot too. Thanks for your comments.

To put this in perspective, I took 1,134 pictures on vacation and these were the only one with flare. So that percentage is pretty small. Hopefully I will get my D750 back in 2 weeks.

Yes flare, even with lenses that are susceptible is kind of blown out of proportion. I have owned a few lenses that are supposed to be terrible, and they aren't that bad. The worst lens for flare I've used was the old AF 20-35mm F2.8D, and hat lens required almost direct sunlight, only at particular angles. Basically it was a 1-100 shot chance in real world use.

If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

I don't think any of them are the recall flare and yes, obviously the first one is normal. Where is the rectangular shape made by the AF sensor or whatever? The next two just look like you have got a really bright light source too close to your frame. Your bottom three shots are just waaay too contrasty situation being over exposed too much. As I unnerstan it, the problem only occurs with bright light at the top of the frame doesn't it?

I dont thing its the issue. There is no "shadow" in the flare

If you want to improve the museum shots you really need a tripod, lower the ISO value to 100 and consider HDR
( I appreciate most museums do not allow tripods )

    same here

the image at the beach is normal.... and the other images where exactly the pictures that i take with my camera and who was marked with the flare issue.... but honestly i don´t see it as an issue if <i look other pictures who show up the bright and then the shadow square at the top of the frame...

if it was a problem or not, feel good that it will show up the website as the "camera is not affected".. so it can be sold without problems...

i can bet it will take like 8 days only... :)

Ideally your are correct. Out of five museums/homes we went through in Charleston, only two allowed photography and your right...no tripods plus they want you to keep up with the tour. That forced me to push the ISO up. Oh how it would have been nice to use a tripod and HDR.

Thanks for the all comments, I just wanted to share the flare issue I encountered on our vacation. I expect people will be posting here in six months. I did make an adjustment on the beach shot and got a nice image with no sun issue.

The question is would we have considered the flare we see in these shots a defect had we not known D750 had such an issue ? My personal opinion is no.

With such strong back or diagonal light hitting the lens, this is what I would expect would happen. Some shots would come out acceptable and some not, depending on the angle.

I would only call it a problem if lens flare appears in situations one typically does not expect to see a flare.

No. They would have been called pushing the lens past its limit.

I agree with that assessment Spraynpray.
