Well the Sigma 150-500 went on its merry way to Australia and the £590 ($840) Tamron 150-600 arrived ...Immediate reaction is that it is sharper ,the autofocus and VR are very good. It seems a little heavier than the sigma and the foot makes a better hand hold even though its smaller. On the D7100 the pictures are spoilt by noise as they were with the sigma even at 800 iso so the D810 gives a better image. As there are very few birds in the UK urban environment it suits me fine being used only when I go on holiday to a rural environment or wetland.
The site that allows you to click back and forth between test charts for Nikon200/500 and Tamron 150/600 shows the Tamron slightly sharper.
For the money I am pleased.

@Pistnbroke: yes, the Tammy seems to be best bang for the buck.

Hard to say, most comparisons I've seen show it's the worst of the 3 (Nikon, Sigma C, Tamron). Then again, most of them are very close. To me the Nikon is the clear winner, not just because is sharper, but thanks to the aperture range alone, it's faster at most points of the zoom range. The Nikkor also has a closer minimum focusing distance, which is a plus as well.

If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

Nikon sharper and faster, Tamron cheaper and still pretty good.

NSXTypeR - I have been following the reviews on the new Nikon 200-500 and the comparisons test between the Nikon 200-500, Tamron 150-600, and Sigma 150-600 C and a few with the Sigma 150-600 Sport.

General consensus is that the Nikon 200-500 F5.6 is the better lens overall. However, for infrequent use and at one focal length the Tamron matched the Nikon in resolution. There are several links to the lens comparisons in the Nikon 200-500 thread...worth checking it out.

Thanks. I guess I'll just have to keep saving...

IDK, the last review I read was on Photography life for the Nik 200-500. His Imatest seems to suggest that the Nikon is best, The Tamron is in the middle and the Sigma C is at the bottom. The comparisons are on page 3 of his review. Also the Tamron is Sharper than the Nikon if you put the 1.4x TC on which I keep seeing people say how good it is with the TC. I think it comes down to sample variation. Also not that anyone cares for a bird lens, but the Nikon drops off a lot in the corners, but no one will notice on the D500 :)

I have the tamron and have seen many really good pics with the D7100/Tam combo.
For me the D7100 shots are much noisier than when I use the D810 ..100% equivalent crops...
So what settings are being used on the D7100 to get such good clear shots or am I better sticking with the D810....... fine tune all done
