I was hoping they'd announce something for the Nikon DL series. Oh well, I wasn't planning on buying any of them anyway. I have a Sony RX100 already.

I know how the D300 people felt waiting for a D400......If they had brought out a 50MP D900 at $4500 it would be too expensive and I could turn my attention to another D810....its not knowing how to plan that's a problem.
  • IronheartIronheart Posts: 3,017Moderator
Get a D810 used, and sell it when the rumors get more real. You won't take a bath like you would on a new. I just picked up a used Df with just over 8k clicks for $1500. I'll sell it when the new Df2 comes out for the 100th anniversary, and I'll probably make money on that deal.

They are currently going for $2K grey, and most used are in that range as well. Currently Nikon has $500 MSRP on a brand-new D810, making it $2800. Let me know if you want me pick one up for you

Not really as Canon f-'d up their M5 with no silent shutter or 4K video.
Nikon's answer are a series of overpriced GoPro competitors.
What this all really means is that I am going to be looking more seriously as the upcoming m43rd's cameras, which looking a lot more aligned to what I would like to see from a mirrorless camera (e.g. something that actually allows me to get shots I could not otherwise get from a DSLR).

Nikon will bring out a DM5 full-frame FX before they bring out a crop sensor. This way they can get everyone to pony up before buying the "good enough" DX. At least this has been their pattern... Don't expect to see a low-end product first.

Fuji seen to have plan - jump FF and get right into mirrorless medium format. Looks interesting and good stable of lenses available at or just following launch. Be interesting to see the price of that kit. Can Nikon follow that - do they want to?

"Nikon's answer are a series of overpriced GoPro competitors. "

Gee, if Nikon had only put the same amount of engineering effort into a Nikon 2 and rationalized its sales price, they might have had a winner. But NO, Nikon is "On a Mission" to waste its engineering prowess so it can bring to market a product that is already years behind the competition. And, speaking of the vaporware DL line....

@BabaGanoush I mostly agree with what you are saying, but I would like to understand "...bring to market a product that is already years behind the competition".

I see this as being very competitive spec-wise and IQ-wise, and price-wise even with the new Hero5 just announced today:

    GoPro Hero5:

    4K@30fps
12mp stills (lots of barrel distortion)
ISO up to 800? (and plenty of noise)
    120° f/unknown
    Electronic image stabilization (1080p only)
    10 Meters waterproof
    $399

    KeyMission 170:

    4K@30fps
    8mp stills (little distortion)
ISO up to 1600 (noise to TBD)
    170° f/2.8
    EIS (1080p)
    10 Meters waterproof
    $399

    What am I missing?

Really Nikon? FX prosumer cameras since D700:

    D750 Sep 2014
    D810 June 2014
    Df Nov 2013
    D800 Feb 2012
    D700 July 2008

I've been waiting to upgrade my D700 (which after 8 years, doesn't seem unreasonable). Don't get me wrong, I love the D700 dearly and it continues to perform magnificently, but there's been some tech improvements over that time. Yes, I know about the 810/800 and 750, but I want a camera with the semi-pro user interface like the 800's that won't bog down my mac with ridiculously sizes files.

Any advice (and please don't use the C word; too large an investment in lenses)?

C=New Computer? If so I have no advice. File sizes are only going to get bigger, not smaller.

Oh you forget the 800e and the 810a :-) but yeah there is no direct D700 upgrade.. you need to go sideways then up.. to the left you get the D600/D610/D750 to the right you get the D800/e/810/a and to the north you get the Df. so really you do have a lot of choices really quite a lot of choices. and PC upgrades are always needed, I mean 8 years of PC upgrades is much much more processing power than is needed to process 12->36mp

solid state drive , i agree though i dont see the need for most people to have huge mega pixel cameras , 20-24 mp is enough imo
have you thought about dx , maybe the d500

I'm happy with my A6300, which cost me $1K. The price of the A6500 is twice the original sales price of the A6000 from just two years ago...and the A6000 is still a pretty decent camera. The A6XXX seems to be on a torrid 1 year upgrade cycle. That's pretty impressive.

I'm more interested in the RX100 Mk5 camera, which I will likely buy along with the underwater case Sony is releasing for the RX100 series cameras. I bought the Mk3 and a Nauticam case specifically for UW photography. However, the Mk3 has a relatively slow CDAF, which is why I still consider my pair of Nikon 1 AW1s my primary UW cameras. The new Mk5 model has on-sensor PDAF, and so it is a very appealing camera. I was waiting for the Nikon DL24-85 camera to be released and hoping someone would make an UW case for it, but with the release of the Sony I won't even bother looking at the DL.

Interesting that the RX100 Mk V is also $1000.
