24th august I bought a Samyang 85mm from Jessops ( Major UK retailer) for £185 checked today and its £295. I have not noticed any price changes in lenses or cameras grey on ebay and this lens is still £219 inc post duty etc from Ireland ( bringing items in from outside EU will cost you +25% in VAT and charges)
Wierd - last time I looked Brexit had not happened and was not likely to even start until 2017. However there have been a series of companies looking to exploit the uncertainty to make bigger profits - so I guess Samyang is just another profiteer.
Global companies that operating in multiple currencies have to hedge themselves against these fluctuations, and adjust prices accordingly. It would be better to look at the Pound (GBP) vs. the Yen (JPY) to understand these price corrections. http://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=JPY&to=GBP&view=1D
Big Pound dip today: if you have foreign currency and buying ability in the UK, right now is a good time! I haven't done any comparisons, but I have to believe there are deals to be had.
The UK prices don't change fast with the dollar variations...the only way to save would be to change $ into £ at just the right time then spend the £. not practical for joe public
One way to do just that is take a vacation or holiday. I remember back before the Euro I could have a five course meal with wine in France, put it on my credit card, and with the exchange rate (calculated on a daily basis) pay like $20 for what cost the locals 60 francs. Those were the days...
@Pistnbroke That is what I meant... If you have foreign currency, i.e. not pounds, and the ability to buy in the UK, there are probably deals to be had. Certainly not an option for everyone, but if the price is right one can usually find a way of making it happen... I bought my 14-24 up in Canada (using USDs) right when oil slipped and the Loonie dropped, saved 25% right off the top.
@Ironheart I hear you! I tend to use lens mules as well...
"For travelers who’ve been mulling over the idea of visiting London, here is a simple piece of advice: Go now. And while you’re there, don’t forget to stop by Selfridges to get your hands on a Louis Vuitton bag. According to a research by consulting and audit firm Deloitte, designer products and other luxury goods, including the much covetable Louis Vuitton handbags, now cost less in Britain (in dollars) than anywhere else in the world. The trend is linked to the Brexit vote in June, which has decreased the value of the pound by more than 17 percent against the dollar. The report, which was prepared for The Wall Street Journal, states that a Speedy 30 handbag from Louis Vuitton now costs $802 as of Friday, October 7. That compares with $850 in Paris, and $970 in New York. In China, the bag is priced at $1,115. The low prices are drawing many tourists now that the country is a much more affordable destination in Europe. Travel bookings from the U.S. to Britain has increased 6 percent for the period between October and December compared to last year, according to VisitBritain, a British tourism agency. In July—right after the Brexit vote—the country experienced 3.8 million visits, which marked a 2 percent increase from July 2015—a new record for any month." http://www.allure.com/story/louis-vuitton-bags-affordable-london
