I just order a new laptop computer.

weight 4.54lbs

screen 3840x2160 4k resolution 282dpi 15.6inch TOUCHSCREEN

M.2 512GB PCI-Express 3.0 x4 storage 1400MBytes/sec write 2200MB/sec read 300,000 iobs transfer speed / upgradable

i7-6700HQ CPU

16GB DDR4 2133 MHz SDRAM can make it 24gb anytime if needed

6hrs battery browsing, 8.5hrs in airplane mode

1 x USB 3.1 TYPE C port(s)
3 x USB 3.0 port(s)
1 x HDMI
1 x Thunderbolt port / mini display port / USB 3.1C uses the same connector

My current 5 year old computer was a 13.3inch 1366 x 768 118dpi LED screen

weight 3.7lbs

16 GB DDR3 1600

i5 3320M

ssd 512gb 400MB/sec transfer between SSD to SSD esata port 200MB through USB3 port to USB3 flash drive.

Wow! How quickly I'm looking at my old computer as a brick.

The main reson for getting a newer one was the 4K touchscreen and 2nd the M.2 512GB PCI-Express 3.0 x4 storage speed. I wonder what I'll be getting in 2021?

Is this the ASUS ZenBook Pro UX501?
I just helped someone pick a Samsung laptop as well. Good specs and all but not 4k and it was under their budget of 1200 as well.

My 2012 macbook pro still runs like a champ but Ill be upgrading to Imac 27, Macbook Pro retina or :( a windows laptop with decent hardware and 4k screen.

Those sound like excellent specs framer especially the 6700HQ. Might as well expand it to 24GB RAM right now without waiting because you know you will use that. I'd love to use 32 actually. I still need to upgrade my system too. I went with a bridge system until I get more funds together. The bridge is better than what I was using but not early enough for my work flow.

ASUS makes some real beasts for post processing. I having been looking at an MSI for over a year too as well as the macs. 2012 is nothing Vipmediastar I used an HP from 2004 til 2012 :( As long as you over spec when you buy (even slightly) you should be able to get a solid 5 years out of post processing system.

You are so into knowing your computers. It was the UX501VW and it was just under $1400. I've been using it for a couple of days and am having to learn a few ways around the 4K monitor. PS CS6 had issues with everything too small to read. There was a fix but much harder to figure it out than doing it. This was repeated with NX-D and Dx0 OpticsPro 11. It was easy once you know the tricks.

I plan on upgrading the memory in a few months. I will be checking out a speed test tomorrow stitching over 20 D810 RAW images together. It might be interesting. The machine boot to the login screen of Window 10 in seven seconds.

FWIW the only thing I'm not liking is Window 10 but I'm old and change is hard. I do love the 282dpi and 4K screen.

Just did a stress test with the new computer.

I loaded 23 D810 RAW files in to PS CS6, each about 45MB in size.

It took 20 seconds per image load time into PS CS6 in my old computer

New Computer only took 9 sec per image to load

I now selected FILE -> AUTOMATE -> PHOTOMERGE -> ADD ALL OPEN FILES selected Blend images together, Vigette Removal & Geometic Distortion Correction

Old computer took 12 min 20 sec to complete the process.

New computer only took 7min 50 sec

Almost 40% faster processing and over 50% faster load times

    The pano file size is 4.2GB .269 x 27 inches @ 300dpi

You chose a good test. Combining several D810 shots into a pano makes PS pause.

Great specs. If you're really going to use your computer a lot, buying the best you can afford is always a smart way to go.

I use a 2013 Macbook Pro which I upgraded from a decked-out 2011 Intel i5 dual-core Mac Mini. Other than the form factor, the MBP has a quadcore version of the processor. That's the main difference. With 16GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD, the MM did extremely well. Easily handled Photoshop and Lightroom at the same time. Just don't try watching Netflix and using those two apps at the same time. That just taxed the system. The MBP can handle that and batch processes photos 2x as fast. But for everyday performance, the two machines aren't much different.

In my over 20 years of IT using both Windows and Macs, the MBP is the best computer I ever bought. Two years old and still going strong. The next generation looks to be really sexy but this machine is just too good to replace.

How's the laptop @framer I'm starting to lean to getting one soon or build a desktop with the nvidia 1060 video card as well.

I have enjoyed almost zero issues since 2012 with the mac. Ready to edit as soon as I turned the machine on vs 100 updates weekly with my windows pc.

note: I have used the latest windows versions so this may have improved greatly since 2012.

Extremely pleased. My wife loves the Mac but I find it restrictive, got to play under the hood. This thing chews through large files but only has a 500GB super SSD. I've got a 1TB external SSD that uses the USB 3.1 and I'm getting better than 450 Mps sustained throughput with large files.

The 4k screen is just super. I went out and bought a 4k 55inch TV to WIDI with the new computer.

Finally, I have pulled the trigger on a new mega computer system :)

I went with an ASUS G752VY gaming computer.

    Specs:

    i7-6820HK
    2.7 GHz-3.6 GHz
64GB DDR4 RAM!!! Maxed out here
2 TB Samsung SSD Drive + 2 TB HDD
8GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 980M (GTX 1070 was not available)
    USB 3.0, 4 USB ports
    4K LED IPS Display
    17.3"
    Windows 10

$3,100 + Bought the 2 TB SSD for $500 as an upgrade.

    Lookout Lightroom and Photoshop CC

Although I have paid for the setup, it is being made now. I pick it up in about 10 days. Does anyone have any thoughts on if I should I still spring for the 8GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 1070 card instead of the 980? I know it makes a 10-15% difference for games, but is there going to be a difference for photo editing software which is the whole reason why I forked over so much cash for this monster system in the first place?

That is a good configuration. If you drive an external 4K monitor, the 1070 would be nice. Are the SSD drives in RAID 0?

Only running 1 SSD and 1 HDD but 2 SSD in RAID 0 would be insane

I have 2 SSD's in raid 0 on my Alienware laptop that is 5 years old and it is insanely fast. No issues with D810 files.

I forgot to point out my laptop uses an M.2 512GB PCI-Express 3.0 x4 SSD so internal writes are in the 1400MB/Sec and reads 2000MB/Sec. I considering upgrading this to one that's twice the size and 30% faster. I'm sure that the main reason for the speed processing RAW files in PS.
