With all this shouting about the d7500 I started to look into the low light characteristics of the 20 mp chip.
Some say the low light ability is fantastic Tom Hogan says IQ slightly better than the 24 mp chip ...
So on DXO for -18 db of noise the 7200 is iso 1333 and the 500 1324......at 6400 iso they are both -24.6 db.

So come on educate me as to why the D500 chip is so fantastic .

Its a shame I traded in my D7200 for my D500 ... otherwise i could provide you with samples ... at the moment my memory of the D7200 is fading... the D500 is that good.. I probably wont be able to assist meaningfully in these types of threads for long.. ( I am so enamoured by my D500 LOL )

The D500 is not only the Sensor chip. However,

One of things I usually set is my maximum ISO for my camera. with my D7000 it was set a 2000 ISO with my D7200 it was set at 3200-4000 ISO with my D500 it is set at 10000 ISO.

Another thing is the colours on MY D500 compared to the D7200.. I guess its not really a Sensor chip thing and more an expeed5 vs expeed4 but I find that the colours are now just great ! I used to nudge it a bit here and there in post processing but, i guess i still do but heaps less !! I am even almost happy to present SOOC with just crop.

Sorry, no technical logic, just one user's subjective use cases.

so if I do my normal thing of working at F8 with max iso at 6400 will I get a "better" picture with a D500 than a D7200. usually the iso goes up to 4000 at 1/30

    I would say probably yes.

For me 4000 ISO on the D7200 was as far as I wanted to push it for "normally good"( nominal ? ) images.. It can go to a quite a bit higher of course and I do push it higher if needed or wanted. The D500 at ISO 4000 is very nice. It may be technically, noise wise, only slightly better than the D7200 but in practice it looks quite a bit better, I think its possibly a combination of the way noise is handled and the way colour is reproduced at the higher ISO.

The AF is pretty good on the D7200 for images at F8, ISO4000, 1/30 .. I think AF on the D7200 will handle it nicely. However, the AF on the D500 is beyond that. I have very good night vision, and I would say the D500 is the first camera I have used that can autofocus beyond what I can see at night. I can now see why the af assist light is not needed on the D500 !! You can't see well enough in the dark to want to photograph whatever it was that was in the dark ! In your case I dunno. Is the AF on the D7200 doing well for you in those situations? the AF on the D500 will not even be pushed. Would a non-hesitant AF be useful?

Although the D7200 is lighter than the D500, I find the D500 less strenuous to hold for longer sessions.. YMMV.

Other d500 features? Wouldn't the tilt screen be useful for you? wouldn't the high FPS be useful during a passionate wedding moment ?

You and I work very differently (photographically).. so I really don't know how much help my views are for you. But I hope it helps.

As for me and my D500.. I have totally lost interest in other cameras. I have packed up almost all my other cameras .. giving them away.. ( still keeping my j5 and D610 but its just for playing with old Full frame lenses and backup although the D610 has been in its box for a while now... I almost was giving it away too.. )

My main emphasis in photography is what I arrange in front of the lens ..the camera is just a box thing to record it ...anything that can be pressed by accident is taped up ..does not sound like there is much improvement over the previous 24 MP DX models relative to what I need. Flippy touch screens dont interest me as long as it has a viewfinder .2 FPS works for me .Buffer no interest . I do need 2 card slots !!!!.Only my wife shoots with a DX now as she finds the D810+28-300 heavy to carry for 6 hrs but if there was a better DX I would buy it for her .

I don't think the IQ is better. If anything at base ISO it's worse. I would not rush to get the 7500 if you had a 7200 or even a 7100 for a couple reasons.
    1) Nikon is likely to offer some sort of discount deal soon given the implied public perception of Sony overtaking them.

    2) There are modest improvements in each camera generation, but you have to decide whether those are worth it to you. Is 4K something you need? Is wifi connectivity something you need? Is a longer buffer something you need? Is a flip out screen something you need? After shooting with an XT-2 recently, I would really argue that probably the Fuji is better right now than any of the Nikon 7xxx cameras including the recently released 7500. The problem is that it also costs more than any of those cameras. Ultimately what you value will determine what camera you best suits you.

right on target manhattenboy ...and I dont need any of the No 2 items. I question mixing fugi images with nikon in PP and indeed the fuji lenses are very expensive.
I think its wait and see and hope for the best while preparing for nothing.

@Pistnbroke - It's not like what you've got stopped working when they bought out the D7500, so as they say - keep calm and carry on ;-)

@heartyfisher - 'almost giving it away' sounds like something I could afford...

Ok Spray thats right but I see conflicting reports on 24v 20.9 MP cameras ..like to keep informed...The only time my wifes D7100 shows its DX routes is taking pics from the back in church......but do I spend money for maybe 5 shots ? A kitted up D810 would cost me £2000 + and with the state of the wedding market ...No NO No.

@Pistnbroke - You shoot JPG for your weddings I think, right? D500 appears to have a bit better SOOC JPGs at high ISOs than D7200, and much better than D7100, depending on which part of the image you look at. D7200 has a bit better fine detail in some areas. The text on the vinegar bottle shows the difference pretty clearly.

I am fortunate to have grandkids who love to go out with gramps and take photos. I am not sure who has the most fun. I will have to decide how mine is split up when I am gone.

Thanks for that BVS but my problem is I dont know how thay had the sharpness set ..if it was as supplied at 3 then it will be junk .all my nikons have been set at +9 and have been for years .I bought another D7100 about 6 weeks ageo for £465 ,new grey.
I use it for video of the service ...We see less and less church weddings and the lighting in hotels is usually good. For an exact understanding of the situation at a wedding you should watch this ..it 110% dead on right.
