I kind of just learnt that some lenses wont work with the J5 and FT1.

specifically I learnt that the 200-500 wont work.. :-( which other lenses wont work ? I have been saving up for a 200-500 and was looking forward to playing with it with the J5 .... I am a bit disappointed... Maybe I should be looking at the Tamron 150-600 ? will that work with the J5 ?

The only telephoto I own that works with the J5 is the new version of the Nikon 80-400mm. I was blind sided like you but Nikon has the following clearly stated on the J5 product page. I am dumbfounded as why they did it this way.

The following NIKKOR lenses cannot be used with the Nikon 1 J5 but will all work with the V1-2-3 Series to the best of my knowledge:

    AF-S NIKKOR 200-400mm f/4G ED VR II
    AF-S NIKKOR 200mm f/2G ED VR II
    AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/2.8G ED VR II
    AF-S NIKKOR 400mm f/2.8E FL ED VR
    AF-S NIKKOR 400mm f/2.8G ED VR
    AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/4G ED VR
    AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4G ED VR
    AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR
    AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR
    AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 200-400mm f/4G IF-ED
    AF-S VR Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED
    AF Nikkor 300mm f/2.8 IF-ED
    AF-I Nikkor 300mm f/2.8D IF-ED
    AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/2.8D IF-ED
    AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/2.8D IF-ED II
    AF-S VR Nikkor 300mm f/2.8G IF-ED
    AF-I Nikkor 400mm f/2.8D IF-ED
    AF-S Nikkor 400mm f/2.8D IF-ED
    AF-S Nikkor 400mm f/2.8D IF-ED II
    AF-I Nikkor 500mm f/4D IF-ED
    AF-S Nikkor 500mm f/4D IF-ED
    AF-S Nikkor 500mm f/4D IF-ED II
    AF-I Nikkor 600mm f/4D IF-ED
    AF-S Nikkor 600mm f/4D IF-ED
    AF-S Nikkor 600mm f/4D IF-ED II
    Nikkor 500mm f/4 P IF-ED
    Zoom-Nikkor 1200-1700mm f/5.6-8 P IF-ED

@TriShooter Thanks for the info... so 300 F4 PF may work :-) Glad to hear that the 80-400 afs works! Its one of the lenses I am considering.

Anyone know if the third party lenses like Tamron, Sigma 150-600 will work? what about the new 100-400 Sigma ?

One of the things I considered a negative for a Tamron 150-600 was the possible incompatibility with the Nikon1. I guess its Nikon's own lenses that are incompatible !

    :-(

Just curious, what makes certain lenses work and others don't? I assume electronic aperture control would be an issue, but does it not work because it doesn't meter but can mount, or is there something more to it?

I assume it can still be used in manual mode in that case.

I don't think any of the "E" lenses will work, since the adapter either does not have enough pins, or more likely the right firmware.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.
