Nikon A900 controls / buttons non reactive

New to Nikon with my new purchase, but totally frustrated with the camera as I can't use the up and left functions circular control button, other buttons are non reactive as well - record, menu and trash. When I select to view pics on the camera the ok:paintbrush symbol appears and this may be the clue to the problem. Only once :'( have I turned on the camera and all the buttons worked. Can someone please tell me what I have done to cause this problem? And more importantly how to correct the problem.

I'm not familiar with Coolpix cameras, but is there a way to factory reset it?

I think that would be the best way to start.

Thanks for the comments, I have resolved the problem now, by taking out the battery and returning after 10 minutes. All the buttons work including the menu button, which ironically was the only way to reset the camera.
