  You might be in HDR mode.
  
  Disclaimer: I know this mode from my Z 6; I don't have a Z 50 or its manual...
  
  In that mode, the camera takest two images at two different exposures and combines them into the JPEG. There's an option to save the two image captures as NEFs; you probably have this set to 'yes'...

  Does HDR work in raw on the Z bodies. IIRC it's disabled on my D7200 and D750 in raw mode.

  No, you need a JPEG mode enabled, at least on the Z 6. To me, that makes sense, as an HDR amalgam would not be raw...

  The raw files are the same, and nope, I'm not in HDR mode! Just double checked.

  The HDR output is JPG but it allows you to keep the RAW files used to create that JPG. I don't think the 7200 or 750 do that.
