ZDX 50-250 4-6.3 Lens

I was thinking about purchasing this for my Z5 camera. But I was informed that using this DX lens on my Z5 camera in the DX crop mode, reduces my pixels approx half?? Is this true, If so, why would you want to buy this lens, I know it is less expensive a lot, but loosing all those pixels, which you might need for larger photos. Explain. Thanks, new at this.

It will indeed reduce your pixels by half and there is no reason to buy this lens for a Z5. The DX lenses are for the Z50 which has a smaller sensor. Consider the NIKKOR Z 24-200MM F/4-6.3 VR for a cheep equivalent lens for your Z5.

I was talking about the ZDX 50-250 lens for the Z5, this would not happen if I use this Z lens, will it

The ZDX 50-250 has a smaller image circle than full frame so you would only get half the pixels or a pre-cropped image. The NIKKOR Z 24-200MM F/4-6.3 VR is the Z5/FF lens.

Your Z5 has a sensor 24mm x 36mm and needs a full frame lens to fully cover it with picture the DX 50-250 is for a camera with a 24x16mm sensor and the picture it produces is not big enough to cover your sensor so it will only use half your pixels.
Not a good idea. If you have an FTZ you could choose another brand of lens.

I have the Nikon 50-250 DX Z lens. I bought both kit lens. They BOTH are amazing! I used the 50-250 lens so MUCH I bought a Z fc with the silver 16-50 sliver and use that for the very good 16-50 rather than taking the 50-250 DX lens off the Z 50. These new DX Nikons are very, very good! I still use the D7200 with the 16-80 lens, the D7500 with the 200-500, and the Z 6 II with the 24-70 F4. These cameras are great in the field and as I generally know what I am going after, I pick the camera and lens from this batch of cameras. Some day I might get a Z 8 or Z9, but the single lens many are looking for is a Z 200-600! The 50-250 is quite awesome and I wouldn't demand it to be a S lens. Nikon better get some Z telephotos out there! And the 200-500 5.6 lens is what I want in A Z lens. I have the FTZ adapter but have not used it ONCE!

Glad to hear that they're good lenses! Now that I hear such solid reviews on Z DX cameras, I may just skip the D7500 and go straight to Z DX whatever Nikon makes. I see the virtue of a smaller kit now. I just wish they weren't slower lenses, but I guess it's worth it for the smaller package.

You might want to see what the Z70/90 looks like.

I use the D7500 almost always on my 200-500 F5.6 Nikon lens. For distance and also focus speed it is extremely tough to get results any better than that. My D500 and D7500 are amazing cameras.

I use the Z50 now almost ALL of the time with the 50-250 and the 16-50 kit lens with the Z fc I bought since I admired the retro look and the function of the various dials, and having those cameras to use and makes a lovely field combo. I also have the Z 6 II which I have with the 24-70 F4 which I have done with video and stills with. I use the Z 6 II the least, but it is great to have.

Of all of these cameras the one I would be MOST likely to add another one of is the D7500. Why? A fast camera of very good quality, low price, and I consider it a smaller and lighter D500.

Oh no doubt, that's what I'm waiting for.

I do like the D7500, but I do value a smaller kit now. Nikon dumped DX DSLRs faster than yesterday's garbage. Hell, I doubt they'll support DSLRs any much longer. If they did the pandemic certainly did that in.

Given the price points of the Z50, Zfc and the Z5, I wouldn't hold my breath for a mid-range DX Z body.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

    I'd sure like to own a Z 70 or Z90! The D500 is still selling in 2021!

I have photographed with the Z 5 and own and use Z 50 and Z fc and own the Z 6 II and several lens for that including 24-70 S f4 lens and the new S 100-400. The D500 and even D7500 are especially productive cameras and I know PROS who just bought two more D500s. We still use D500s today. A Z version of the D500 would bring more pros into mirrorless than many here realize! And if you think Z FX cameras are such a wonderful proposition WHY are guys like Phil Thatch and Thom Hogan using Z 50s as their PRIMARY walkabout cameras?? A Z 70 or Z 90 would attract far more buyers than some Nikon Rumors regulars realize. I for one shoot at f8 routinely on purpose as I want depth of field. Bookeh is totally LOST on me! I need reach AND depth of field. I do more farm photography than anyone I have ever even heard about. And farmers when they want equipment or field photos want the whole photo as sharp as possible.

Apart from the 50-250mm, you can also buy the 24-50mm f/4-6.3 for the Z5, great lens, I sometimes use it on the Z6. There are also the small 28mm f/2.8 and the 40mm f/2 lenses, if you want to travel light. This gives you a great set of full frame lenses for any situation.

For a small Nikon DX body, I am waiting for one with IBIS to come along.

I agree with Ton14 about a Z DX camera with IBIS. I have had very good luck shooting the Z 50 and Z fc cameras, even in boats where there are waves to rock the boat, but adding IBIS to the DX Z bodies would cost more but entirely worth it! My Z 6 II and 24-70 S f4 lens though rarely ever goes out on those trips. Nikon has pushed FX to a point that is questionable. The D500 camera is getting sold to PROS yet sure should be revamped as a mirrorless DX Z camera body, WITH IBIS. And available with zoom telephotos like the roadmap 200-600. Lastly I see a great NEED for a FX Z prime wide angle lens like a 16 or 18 perhaps f/2 lens
